Wrexham is a large town lying in north-eastern part of Wales, close to the English border with Cheshire. Wrexham town which has a population of around 60,000 is situated in Wrexham County Borough which has an estimated population in 2005 of around 130,200. Wrexham is the largest town in North Wales and ranks as the third largest retail centre in Wales after Cardiff and Swansea.
Wrexham is the commercial and administrative centre for the industrial area of North East Wales and in spite of the fact that it has a modern, pedestrianised shopping centre it has retained a market town atmosphere. It has several indoor markets and still has regular outdoor and farmers markets. The town has plenty of shops, and a new shopping mall Eagles Meadow is attracting new interest in the area. There are also a variety of bars and restaurants to suit most.
The last couple of decades have witnessed a significant change in the industrial character of the area as the traditional industries of coal mining and brick-making declined and disappeared. However, it has developed beyond all expectation over the past decade, and is now 'the place to be' in North Wales.
As Wrexham is a major tourist destination, attracting over 1.4 million visitors each year, there is lots to see. It has it's own football club which plays at the Racecourse ground. There is an Arts Centre and a Museum in the town centre. Close to Wrexham there is Erddig Hall and Chirk Castle, both run by the National Trust. Wrexham is surround by countryside and there are many parks and places of interest to visit.
