Watchmen on the Walls

Following on from what Russ shared with us on Sunday morning I want to explore what watching on the walls entails this week.
We are all soldiers in the Lord’s army (2 Timothy 2:3-4) & as soldiers each of us takes our turn on the watch.
There will be different places where we are assigned to watch on the walls.
It is good to know & understand what the Lord wants us to watch over.

I will stand my watch
And set myself on the rampart,
And watch to see what He will say to me,
And what I will answer when I am corrected. Habakkuk 2:1-2

Habakkuk is making reference to the constant watch upon the walls of Jerusalem.
We are to be the spiritual sentries for our families, churches, streets, town & nation.
The Lord’s lookouts seeking to discern where God is on the move & the guards seeking to spy out & see what the enemy is up to.

We take our allotted place & watch upon the wall for a number of differing reasons:

  • to hear what the Lord is saying at this time (Isaiah 62:6-10; Habakkuk 2:1-2)
  • to understand & discern the times we are living in (1 Chronicles 12:32)
  • to intercede for people, places, nations & the world (Ezekiel 22:30-31; Hebrews 13:17)
  • to sound the trumpet if the enemy is advancing or attacking (Ezekiel 3:17, 33:3-6)

We need to take up our watch daily, diligently & with attention to detail.
If the walls are not constantly being watched they can easily be advanced upon & then breached.
Our watch, when faithfully & fully executed, provides safety, security & a covering for those entrusted to our care.
May we not be found wanting in the watch we have been assigned.

For Reflection

  • Do I understand who & what the Lord wants me to prayerfully ‘watch’ over?
  • Am I faithfully watching & praying right now?
  • Mediate upon the task of being a spiritual watchman.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for Your great unceasing watch over us.
Through the power of the Spirit help us to faithfully fulfill the watch You have assigned each one of us.
Give us eyes to see, ears to hear & hearts to discern & understand.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
Amen.
