God – Our constant Refuge & Strength

God is a refuge & strength for His people – repeatedly & reliably.
The Scriptures bear constant witness to this.
Joseph abandoned & cast into a pit by His brothers but never abandoned by the Lord who would lift him on high to save the world – a prototype of Christ.
The Lord in the midst of the Israelite’s camp protecting & leading them through the pillar of cloud & fire.
What about the many testimonies of great king David which so many of the Psalms bear witness to.

Then David spoke to the Lord the words of this song, on the day when the Lord had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.
And he said:
“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
The God of my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation,
My stronghold and my refuge;
My Savior, You save me from violence.
I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies. 2 Samuel 22:1-4 NKJV

David knew many hardships, difficulties & struggles in the time between being anointed by Samuel & then finally becoming King.
King Saul, insecure & racked with jealousy, sought David’s life on numerous occasions.
David looked to the Lord to be his continuing refuge & strength.
David knew that God was his secure stronghold & the repeated source of his rescue (salvation).
God rescued & delivered David time & time again.
Constantly calling on the Lord was the means by which he was saved from his enemies (Psalm 22:19; 28:8; 46:1; 59:16).

24 times in the Psalms God is referred to as our refuge.
Around 60 times as the strength of His people.
The Prophets pick up the same message of encouragement & hope for God’s people.
Both Isaiah & Jeremiah reminding the people that God is both their refuge & their strength (Isaiah 25:4; Jeremiah 16:19).
God the constant source of help & deliverance for His people.

God is our rock, refuge, strength, shield, shelter & stronghold. Hallelujah!!
He is ever with us & only a heartbeat & whisper from our respite.
Keep looking to the Lord as your refuge & strength.
Sing of His strength in the day of peace & calm & shout for it in the day of distress.
He is ever with us & for us. Our constant companion & reliable means of rescue.
O what a mighty Saviour!!
What can we do but constantly praise & give thanks as David did.

For Reflection

  • Do I sing of His strength & readily call for His aid & help?
  • Recall, & give testimony of, a time when God rescued or delivered you?
  • Mediate upon the Lord of Hosts our refuge & strength.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that you are our refuge,
Our strong tower & secure sanctuary, our mighty stronghold.
Thank you that You are our shield & strength,
Our constant deliverer & Saviour,
A very present help in times of trouble & a sure hope in the day of distress.
Keep us ever in the shadow of Your wings,
In the mighty name of Jesus,
