Stay the course, Finish well

Undoubtedly, Joseph was refined through the suffering & injustices he endured.
He passed through suffering to save a people (Israel) & a nation (Egypt). In this he was a forerunner & type of Christ.
Jesus passed through suffering to provide salvation for all people & all nations. Hallelujah!!
Joseph stood strong in his integrity.  Resisting sin & the easy path.
He walked in integrity so that when swift promotion came he could govern & rule with integrity.
Jesus stayed even stronger & He who knew no sin became sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21).
As a result, He will take up an eternal rule & reign of righteousness & integrity.  Glory to God.
Another quality that Joseph honed & fined tuned was humility.  Again a core characteristic of Christ (Philippians 2:5-11).

Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more.
So he said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:
There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright;
and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”
Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said,
“Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.” Genesis 37:5-7 & 9

Joseph was gifted with a powerful prophetic gift. He received dreams & visions that accurately predicted the future.
In his youth he lacked the maturity to rightly operate in it. This led to tension, trouble & severe fallout in his family.
The revelation was spot on but his interpretation & application needed maturing & development.
That came with time & in the midst of much toil & trouble!!!
However, in the Lord’s perfect timing the gift made room for him (Proverbs 18:16).
It was the means for his rapid advancement & swift promotion.

In his teens Joseph spouted forth the prophetic revelation without any thought of how it might impact others.
Later in his dealings (roughly 11 years) with the butler & the baker we see the gift refined & Joseph giving credit to the Lord.
Again the revelation is spot on & this time accurate interpretation accompanies it (Genesis 40:5-23 nb verse 8).
With the application perhaps he could have been a little more sensitive, but there again how do you pronounce a death sentence!!!
By the time the gift is brought before Pharaoh (age 30 after 13 years in prison) it has been perfected.
All three elements are spot on & quickly recognised as truly from the Lord by Pharaoh & his officials.
Joseph now gives all the credit to the Lord. God’s role has increased & Joseph’s has decreased (Genesis 41 nb verse 16)!!!
As a result there is a miraculously turnaround in Joseph’s & Egypt’s fortunes.
Joseph had stewarded the gift before the audience of One.
In humility he kept on faithfully serving – wherever the Lord placed & positioned him.
Humility had helped to hone & perfect the gift to its full potential.
The Lord could then Joseph & his gifts mightily.

Joseph came to understand that the gift was given to him to bless others & not just for his own benefit.
He also learnt that the glory & praise for any success had to rightly go to the Lord. Humility lifts the Lord higher.
Joseph humbly continued to serve even amid hardship & suffering. He never lost purpose in the midst of his pain – SELAH.
Joseph also humbly acknowledged God’s presence & hand during his many sufferings (Genesis 45:5, 7, 8).
God was always there with him, shaping & directing things to get Joseph where, & when, the Lord needed him.
God did not initiate all the suffering or injustice against Joseph but he did turn it to good (Romans 8:28).
The gift carried a purpose which was far greater than Joseph could have ever hoped or imagined (Ephesians 3:20-21).
Operating with total humility & serving faithfully allowed the Lord to maximise the potential & power of the gift.
It allowed the advancement of God’s purposes on the earth rather than just the advancement of the individual (bow down to me).
The gift carried the purpose & power to bring salvation to people & nations.
The gifts the Lord bestows upon, & deposits within, us carry this same potential & purpose.
They are for the salvation of many peoples & the discipleship of the nations (Matthew 28:16-20).
They will make room for us if we faithfully serve in them with true humility.
Humility is the way of Christ & the cross & therefore it must be our way too.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less – C.S. Lewis.

For Reflection

  • Where & in what ways are my Gog-given gifts making room for me right now?
  • How faithful & humble is my heart before the Lord & others?
  • Meditate upon what it means to steward the gifts the Lord has entrusted to us with humility.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are ever with me & always for me,
Constantly watching over me & ever leading & directing me.
Jesus thank you that You are humility ‘par excellence’,
Give me help & strength to walk as You walked.
Holy Spirit help me to keep faithfully serving the Lord & others,
To know & fulfill the purpose You have for me whatever my circumstances. |
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
