Shelter in a time of storm
Around the globe people are experiencing a number of ferocious storms.
People & places are being buffeted & battered in devastating ways.
The disruption & devastation of these storms leading to great suffering & tragic loss.
In one sense the whole world has been living through the raging storm of the Covid pandemic.
Storms always leave a mark & are not without effect.
The good news for God’s children is that Jesus is our shelter amidst the storm (Psalm 61:4; Joel 3:16).
On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.”
Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was.
And other little boats were also with Him.
And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.
But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow.
And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!”
And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”
And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
Mark 4:35-41 NKJV
The disciples experienced ferocious storms too.
Jesus was the one who brought peace & calm to their situation.
The peace that flowed from His person, His presence & the authority He carried.
The peace with power to still the storm. SELAH.
He remains the one who can bring peace & calm to our situation.
Rising fear within was increasingly paralysing them despite them being skilled oarsmen & experienced fishermen.
In a desperate last act, & at their wits end, the disciples turned to & awoke Jesus.
In an instant the storm was stilled at Jesus authoritative command.
Jesus brought peace to the storm on the sea & also the storm & turmoil in the disciples hearts & minds.
The wind & waves were immediately calmed along with the raging fears & anxieties of the disciples.
They needed to find Jesus in the midst of the storm. To come to Him & call upon Him in the midst of their distress.
Jesus was with them ALL the time. The source of their salvation & deliverance was ever at hand.
The shelter was at hand but they had to step into it & take cover!
Fear can so easily & quickly make us forget the presence of the Lord alongside us.
We stand strong in the midst of any storm by coming unto Jesus our sure shelter & salvation.
Jesus who is the shelter from every, external & internal, storm we may encounter or experience in this life.
Reach out for His peace afresh today, step into the shelter He provides.
- Recall & reflect upon a time Jesus’ peace & presence made all the difference.
- What storm or storms are you facing right now?
- Meditate upon the power of the Lord’s peace.
A song related to this theme:
Heavenly Father, O God of Peace,
Thank you for Jesus, the Prince of Peace, who is my peace.
Thank you Jesus that you are my shelter in every storm.
Holy Spirit help me to keep looking unto & finding the Lord,
Amidst the occurring storms of this life.
In Jesus mighty Name,
