The Great Gift of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is active throughout the Scriptures.
In the Old Testament (OT) He comes upon people & fills them for special purpose & tasks (e.g. Samson, Gideon).
In the New Testament the Holy Spirit operates on, in & through the people of God.
We have the great privilege & awesome gift of the Holy Spirit living within us (John 14:17; 2 Timothy 1:14).
That is why Jesus refers to the least in the Kingdom of God as being greater than John the Baptist (the last & greatest of the OT prophets Matthew 11:11).

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Our bodies are a dwelling place & a temple for the Holy Spirit.
He who is our helper in all things takes up habitation in the very core of our being.
A temple is a place of worship & the place where we give glory unto God.
We are given the Holy Spirit so that our lives can glorify God.
As we stay in step with the Spirit (following his lead in the great Trinitarian dance of love) we will glorify God (Galatians 5:16; Romans 8:1 & 4).
We therefore need to be ever attentive, alert & responsive to the divine guest!!
Hearing his voice & following His lead. Always & in all things!

In enabling & empowering us to glorify God in & through our bodies the Holy Spirit brings the life of God to us (Titus 3:5).
He produces the fruit of His nature & character in us (Galatians 5:22-23).
He stimulates & releases spiritual gifts in us & through us (Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12-14, Ephesians 4:7-11).
He is the prophetic Spirit who prays through us according to the will & ways of God (Romans 8:26-27).
He is the illuminator of Scripture & the revealer of God’s truth. In all things He reveals Jesus more fully to us.

In just a brief look at what the Holy Spirit equips & empowers believers for we can see how important it is for us to cultivate a strong relationship with the Spirit of God.
We cannot follow Jesus effectively without Him. He is the very living breath of God in us!!
To be effective worshipers, witnesses & warriors of Christ we need the Spirit’s strength & power.
We are a people who live from the inside out!
It is therefore imperative that we seek to avoid grieving (Ephesians 4:30) or quenching (1 Thessalonians 5:19) His work in us or others..
Daily obedience & constant submission are needed to keep pursuing greater intimacy & partnership with the Holy Spirit.
As we do so Jesus will be revealed in greater measure. Hallelujah!

For Reflection

  • Do I recognise Holy Spirit’s fruit & gifts in my life?
  • How well do I stay in step with the Holy Spirit?
  • Meditate on the incredible blessings & benefits the Holy Spirit brings to the believer.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
We thank You gifting us with the precious priceless gift of Your Spirit.
Thank you that you reside & live within us,
Bringing Your very breath & life to our lives.
Teach & train us Holy Spirit to flow in Your fruit & gifts,
That we might reveal Jesus in all His glory,
This we ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
