The Great Gift of the Holy Spirit

Jesus Christ is the anointed one. Christ literally means ‘anointed one’.
He received that anointing for ministry at His baptism (Luke 3:21-22) through the Holy Spirit.
Jesus confirmed this as He launched His ministry at Nazareth – the Spirit of the Lord has anointed me (Luke 4:16-20).
We His followers are given the same anointing through the pouring out of the Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).
Like Christ we are anointed for the completion of the ‘Missio Dei’.
The reconciling of all things unto God & to see the Kingdom of God come on the earth (2 Corinthians 5:19; Matthew 6:33).

Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God,
who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22

But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. 1 John 2:20

As a believer in & follower of Christ each disciple is anointed by the Holy Spirit. An anointing from the anointed One.
St Theophilus (2nd Century theologian) wrote ‘we are called Christians (christianoi) because we have been anointed (chrisometha) with the oil of God.’
The anointing of God through the Holy Spirit runs & flows freely over & through our lives. We are covered & clothed in it.
How incredible is that. Anointed liberally & generously with an anointing to know all things.
Absolutely amazing!

In Old Testament times anointing was reserved for Kings, Priests & Prophets.
Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of the office & function of Prophet, Priest & King – the Great Prophet (Deuteronomy 18:15) the Great High Priest (Hebrew 4:14) & the King of Kings (1 Timothy 6:15)!
In Him we are a prophetic people (Matthew 5:12) & kings & priests unto our God (Revelation 1:6, 5:10)
The anointing of God poured out liberally through the Spirit brings blessing & breaks yokes.

Like Christ we are anointed to be good news & gospel bearers & bringers.
To proclaim good news to the poor, freedom for captives, recovery of sight to the blind & to set the oppressed free.
To proclaim the acceptable year & favour of the Lord.
Anointed to bring the Kingdom of God with power & to proclaim Christ as the world’s true King.
Hallelujah what an anointing. Hallelujah what an assignment.

For Reflection

  • Do I rightly treasure God’s anointing on my life?
  • Where is the anointing of the Holy Spirit flowing in my life right now?
  • Meditate on the anointing of the Spirit of the Lord.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the anointing You liberally pour over us,
How wonderful, powerful & precious it is.
Holy Spirit teach us to flow & function in that anointing,
So that we can be bringers & bearers of the good news of the Kingdom & King Jesus.
This we ask in the mighty Name of Jesus,
Amen
