Responding to God

We see people in the Bible repeatedly responding to God with H.O.T. FAITH.
They hear, obey & trust the word & instruction of the Lord.
Today we will explore a little more about HEARING.

But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” John 10:2-5

Then Eli perceived that the LORD had called the boy.
Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant hears.’ ”
So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
Now the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”
And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears.” 1 Samuel 4:8b-10

The Lord is constantly communicating to us. He is ever calling us into His service.
We therefore need to be those who listen & listen well.
To hear we must practice & perfect the art of listening. NB. You have 2 ears & only 1 mouth!!
Spiritually we hear with both the ears & the heart.
We need a ready ear & a receptive responsive (soft) heart (Hebrews 3:7,15 & 4:7).

Jesus makes it crystal clear that His sheep hear His voice & follow Him.
What can we do to help us hear better? It helps to turn on & tune in.
The TV or radio is always transmitting but to hear we have to turn it on & tune in.
God is ever speaking & we have to turn on (quiet & position ourselves) & tune in (pay attention).
It is then that we see & hear what is being communicated.

Position yourself, Pay attention, Put it into practice

We also like Samuel must learn to recognise the voice of the Lord.
To filter out the many voices that compete for our attention & to hone in on His still small voice (1 Kings 19:12).
The voice that speaks with His love & brings peace.
The whispers, in our spirit, that carry & convey the will, word & way of God.
When we recognise that voice we must register (write it down & note it) what is being said & then respond in the right way at the right time.
The revelations of the Lord must be interpreted rightly & also applied in precise & proper ways.

Recognise, Register, Respond

The Father, Son & Spirit are ever communing & communicating with us.
We must find the ways & means to most effectively hear from them.
Establishing the disciplines necessary to hear the living God who sees, hears & speaks (Genesis 16:13-14).
Like the example of Christ that often means sacrificing time in the secret & quiet place!!
Speak Lord for your servants are listening.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I listening to & hearing from God right now?
  • Do I recognise the ‘distinctive’ voices of the Father, Son & Spirit?
  • Meditate on the living God who sees, hears & speaks.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
The Living God who sees, hears & speaks,
We thank you that You are constantly communing & ever communicating with us.
Jesus draw us deeper & closer into intimate fellowship with You,
That You may lead us in Your paths of righteousness, peace & truth.
Holy Spirit strengthen & sharpen our spiritual senses,
Teach & train us to listen well,
That we may swiftly recognise & smartly respond to Your voice & call.
This we ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Amen
