Thought for the Week: 15th – 21st August 2022

Meditate on these things

It is important that we do not just read Scripture but also that we meditate upon it.
That we focus our thoughts & attention upon it so that the Holy Spirit can release revelation to us.
That revelation is a source of God’s light & life to us to illuminate our paths through life (Psalm 119:105 & 130).
There is a constant battle for our minds (2 Corinthians 10:3-6) so it is key that we fill them with the Word of God.
This is what Paul encourages the Philippian church to do – Meditate upon the word of God.

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. “ Philippians 4:8

To meditate is to direct the mind to a point of focus. What better focus than the Word of God.
Meditation brings awareness, attentiveness & clarity. Again, what better way than through the Scriptures.
It is a means of training our minds to be full of, & bring to remembrance, the Scriptures.
Meditating upon the Word of God & Christian values will help to equip us as disciples.
It is a valuable means of building strength in our Christian life.
If we are going to meditate then let us do it (assisted by the Holy Spirit) upon those things that will bring life (John 6:63; 2 Corinthians 3:6).

The apostle Paul encourages meditation upon several Christian values:
What is True?
What is Noble / Honourable?
What is Just / Right?
What is Pure?
What is Lovely / Beautiful?
What is Commendable?
What is Excellent?
What is Praiseworthy / Admirable?

Jesus will ultimately be the fullest expression of each of these attributes & virtues but there will be many other sources & inspirations too.
Why not spend each separate day this week meditating upon them in turn?
Ask the Holy Spirit to whisper & speak His revelation to you.
You will be blessed as you do.

For Reflection

  • Do I think about, dwell upon & muse over the scriptures?
  • In what ways have I practiced Christian meditation?
  • Meditate upon the benefits of Christian meditation.

2 songs related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the power of Your Word,
That in it is life, help, strength & sustenance.
Jesus lead me in the way everlasting.
Holy Spirit release Your revelation to me,
Illuminate my path through life.
In Jesus mighty Name.
