Servants to the Saints – Angels

Wonderfully the Lord assigns His angels to assist & aid His people.
Whilst we are to appreciate the ministry of angels to us, we are only ever to adore the Lord.
We worship the One who commands the angels. We look to the King of Kings & Lord of Lords (1 Timothy 6:15).
We have thought about the different forms of angelic ministry as well as the different types of angels.
In summing up this series we will consider Guardian Angels.
Guardian angels watch over believers & they watch over churches & nations.

But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel. Hebrews 12:22-24

There is great popular opinion & strong feelings around the concept that guardian angels are assigned to specific individuals.
This sort of belief has been prevalent since the days of early church fathers. It is also prevalent within Judaism & particularly the New Age movement.
Some even suggest we can get to know these angels personally or even command them!! I would strongly advise against this.
Whilst the above is a very nice thought the Biblical evidence is not wholly convincing & remains controversial.
2 main verses are usually used – Matthew 18:10 & Acts 12 with Peter’s angel.
The context Jesus is talking about is far more likely how hugely loved & valued these little ‘overlooked & despised‘ ones are to the Father.
Jesus also uses the plural ‘angels’ rather than singular angel.
For certain & without any doubt angels (plural) are given a guarding, protecting role to watch over believers as the Lord directs (Psalm 34:7, 91:11-12).
It is therefore far more likely there are bands of angels watching over individuals, families, or groups rather than just one.
Strength & security in numbers!! I personally find that more reassuring & comforting.
I am more encouraged knowing that there are angelic numbers with a watching brief over me rather than just a sole angel.
Maybe this is why & where we inherited the term ‘an angelic hedge of protection’ which we often use in prayer. (Hedge=plural Bush=singular!!!)
Benefit from & give thanks for the angels assigned to watch over & guard your life & ministry but do not seek to get to know them intimately.
Let any angelic encounter or visitation be initiated by the Lord, through His messengers & servants the angels, rather than by us.

Angels are also given a watching, guarding & protecting role over churches & nations.
Michael The Archangel was watching over, & warfaring over, the affairs of the nation of Israel (Daniel 10:21, 12:1).
The churches that the apostle John prophecies to in Revelation each has an angel watching ‘supernaturally overseeing’ over it (Revelation 1:20, 2:1, 8,12, 18, 3:1,7,14). The Biblical evidence is sound & far less controversial in support of both these concepts.
Guardian Angels of both nations & churches. Heavenly messengers appointed with spiritual responsibility for both churches & nations.
Unseen & most often invisible they watch over us, & warfare for us, as the Lord directs.

Angels, undoubtedly, watch over & guard the lives of believers. They are Guardian Angels.
They also do the same for churches & nations.
The Biblical evidence suggests that this type of ministry is far more likely carried out collectively rather than by sole angels.
Even Michael, the Archangel & Prince of Israel, was assisted by other angels in his heavenly battles.
It is the ministry of angels that we benefit from & are thankful to the Lord for.
This in stark contrast to the ministry of any one particular angel!
How wonderfully that myriads of myriads of angels are at the Lord’s command to watch over & guard us – Just awesome & so amazing!
Keep appreciating the ministry of the angels but adore only, & keep giving all the glory unto, the Lord ALONE. Hallelujah!!!

For Reflection

  • How mindful am I of the protective, watching, war faring & guarding ministry of the angels?
  • How aware am I of the ministry of angels to churches & nations?
  • Meditate upon the ministry of Guardian Angels.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for Your angel armies that ever serve You,
By ministering to Your children, churches & the nations.
Jesus thank you for the Guardian Angels,
That there are numbers assigned to watch over me.
Holy Spirit keep my heart truly appreciative of the ministry of angels,
And like the angels keep we are worshipping, praising & glorifying the Lord ALONE.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
