Praise Him in the Psalms

The psalms are a wonderful stimulus to praise the Lord through.
At times they reveal brutal honesty & raw emotion from the depths of the human soul.
The next moment they are lost in exuberant exaltation & worship of the Lord.
The heights of worship & the depths of despair expressed through heartfelt praise & thankfulness.
A striking feature is that they are full of thanks & praise unto the Lord.
Today we will look at Psalm 136.

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the God of gods!
For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords!
For His mercy endures forever: Psalm 136:1-3

26 times in this Psalm we are reminded that God loves us – His great love & mercy endures forever.
26 times we are also reminded to give thanks for it!!
You are eternally loved by God. There is no better thing.
He cannot love you anymore & He cannot love you any less.
It is something that we are to be ever thankful for.
The Psalm also highlights several other things to thank & praise the Lord about.

The psalm begins by exalting God above all else. Recognising Him for who He truly is (verses 1-4).
It then focusses on the Lord the great Creator (verses 5-9).
God is then exalted as Israel’s Redeemer (rescuing them through the Exodus verses 10-14).
The Lord is the Good Shepherd leading His flock through the wilderness (verse 16).
He is also the Deliverer from evil (freeing them from a number of evil kings verses 15-20 & 24).
The Lord is also the provider (Jehovah Jireh verses 21-25). Providing for all creation & giving Israel a great inheritance.
All of this interspersed with constant repeated reminders of His goodness & great love.
What a magnificent Psalm. So much in here to meditate upon.
All the great things expressed in this Psalm are made real & available to us through our mighty saviour Jesus.
In Him, & through Him, you are loved with an enduring, everlasting, eternal love. Never stop giving thanks for that.
Rest secure in the steadfast love & faithfulness of the goodness of God toward you. Revel in His great favour.
He is your creator, redeemer, shepherd, provider & deliverer. So, So, good. Thank you JESUS.
Keep thanking & praising the Lord for his goodness, grave, mercy & love. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I giving thanks for God’s great love & goodness towards me?
  • When , where & how am I offering praise unto the Lord?
  • Meditate upon the great love & mercy of the Lord.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are the great God,
The One True & Living God above all other gods.
Jesus thank you that You make all the promises of God yes & amen to me,
That You are my creator, redeemer, shepherd, provider & deliverer.
Holy Spirit keep me praising & thanking the Lord for His great love & mercy all my days.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
