Praise Him in the Psalms

The psalms are a constant inspiration for our continuing praise & worship of the Lord.
They deal with every human emotion & experience.
Whatever the psalmist is going through they end up thanking & praising the Lord.
Today we will look at Psalm 46. God the refuge of His people & the conqueror of the nations.
A psalm that starts with praise & ends with prophecy!!

God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah Psalm 46:1-3

This psalm exalts the Lord as our constant source of strength & the securest place of refuge.
God is always available to help & therefore we need not fear.
The people of God can stay calm & confident even in the midst of global calamities.
Because of God’s faithful unchanging nature we can have confident assurance & a bold confession.
God is ready & willing to help us at any time – ever present. He is faithful & can be relied upon.
Rescue, restoration & refreshment flow From God our constant refuge & help (verses 4-6) . So good.

The psalmist again recounts & recalls the great works & deeds of the Lord (verses 8-9).
God rules & reigns over the nations even though they so often resist & rage against Him.
He will subdue them & be exalted in all the earth.
God’s love, light & life will dawn (break forth fully) to triumph over all.
God’s light can & will break through the darkness of any & every distress.
His protection & providential rule is always being worked out for the people of God.

A repeated refrain (verses 7 & 11) reminds the people of God that the lord is with them.
He is their refuge & ever ready help. With the people of God & for the people of God. Hallelujah!!
It is also interesting to note the various names & titles ascribed to the Lord in this psalm.
God is ever present & up close & personal (intimate) with His covenant people.
We are the Covenant people through Jesus the Saviour.
Finally, we are exhorted to be still & acknowledge God for who He truly is (verse 10).
Lord of ALL, King of the Nations & the world’s true Lord (Revelation 11:15, 15:3-4).
BE STILL. Bow down & worship. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • Am I truly trusting the Lord amid the global calamities we are experiencing in our day?
  • In what ways do I still myself before the Lord?
  • Meditate upon the Lord who is our refuge & the One who rules the nations.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are my ever-present help & refuge,
At the same time as being Ruler of ALL & King of the nations.
Jesus thank you that through Your sacrificial blood,
I am part of the Covenant people & secure in Your provision & protection.
Holy Spirit keep me remembering & recounting the mighty works of the Lord,
And keep me stilling myself in His awesome presence,
Worshipping the Lord for who He truly is.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
