Stay the course, Finish well

As we noted earlier in this series Joseph started a little shakily, but he finished really well.
With a forgiven & free heart he could rule & govern with integrity, impartiality, justice & grace.
Having honed & fine-tuned the gift entrusted to him Joseph was used powerfully in the Lord’s perfect timing.
God used Joseph’s TOTAL integrity, humility, trust & forgiveness to bring salvation to people & nations.
In this Joseph was a forerunner & type of Christ. Two final thought s about him today.

Pharaoh also said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no man may lift his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.” And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnath-Paaneah.
And he gave him as a wife Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pharoah priest of On.
So Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.
Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt.
And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

Genesis 41:44-46

Joseph’s impact saved many lives & hugely influenced Pharaoh.
As a result Pharaoh entrusted Him with the running & administration of the nation.
The name Pharaoh gives to Joseph is very telling. Zaphnath-Paaneah.
This probably means God lives & He speaks or `bringer of or supporter of life’.
Joseph’s testimony & ministry has enabled Pharoah to recognise the one true God.
Pharoah clearly saw the Spirit of God at work in Joseph’s life bringing wisdom & life to a desperate & deadly situation.
That is the goal of all our lives that people recognise & acknowledge the Lord in & through our lives.
The name can also be translated treasury of the glorious rest.
Joseph stored up vast treasures of life sustaining grain in the years of plenty.
Joseph brought peace, life & rest to the nation amidst the tempest & storm of a severe prolonged famine.
Hebrews interpreted the Hebrew form of the word as ‘revealer of secrets’.

Despite being renamed with an Egyptian name Joseph knew who he truly was.
That name gave insight into Joseph’s function under God but he never forgot who he was & where he came from.
Joseph understood his heritage & identity & stood strong in it.
So much so that approaching his death He made the children of Israel promise to carry His bones back to the land of promise.
Joseph exceled whilst in exile but he knew where his true home was.
God enabled him to prosper greatly In a foreign land but he never forgot where he truly belonged.

And Joseph said to his brethren, “I am dying; but God will surely visit you,
and bring you out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”
Then Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you,
and you shall carry up my bones from here.” So Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old;
and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt. Genesis 50:24-26

God is the one who can enable us to run the race with perseverance (Hebrews 12:1-2).
He alone can keep us on the right paths & moving at the right pace. Starting, continuing & finishing well.
Throughout this journey we need to know who we are & who we belong to.
We are children of the living God who can flourish & fruit wherever He places us. Our identity is ‘In Christ’.
Through integrity, humility, trust & with forgiving hearts we play our part in the great plan & purposes of God.
He will use us powerfully & beyond anything we could ever hope or imagine (Ephesians 3:20-21).
To God be the glory. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways is my life & ministry revealing the one True God?
  • What is God revealing to me that can bring life to others right now?
  • How & where is God enabling me to excel at this time?
  • Meditate upon who we are & who we belong to ‘In Christ’.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are the Living God,
You see, hear & speak powerfully into our lives.
Jesus help & strengthen me as I journey with You through life,
Let me hear, heed & swiftly obey your voice that calls me onward.
Holy Spirit help me to be strong & secure in my identity ‘In Christ’,
Flourishing & ever fruitful in Your plans & purposes for my life.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
