Encounters with the Risen Christ

An encounter with the risen Christ is a life changing experience.
Through His post resurrection appearances Jesus changed forever the lives of those he met with.
That transformation took place whether it was groups He met with or individuals.
It remains the same for us today.

Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,
and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?
Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him,
“Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father;
but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father,
and to My God and your God.’ ” John 20:14-17

Mary was the first witness of the resurrected Christ. The Lord’s first choice & He doesn’t make mistakes.
It is no coincidence that the encounter took place in a garden either. SELAH.
When the recognition came Mary sought to lay hold of Jesus & cling on!! Who can blame her.
Amazingly Jesus chose to appear to someone whose testimony would not be accepted in a law court!!
How different are the Lord’s ways to ours (Isaiah 55:8). However, wisdom is known by her works (Matthew 11:19).
Mary got the job done & Jesus was hugely active & involved in making it happen too!!

Jesus was to appear to others in amazing, life-transforming ways too.

  1. He gave peace to His people & released the Holy Spirit to them.
  2. He brought faith in place of fear & doubt, setting them free to worship.
  3. He opened their eyes fully, stirred their hearts & brought Scripture alive.

Just some of the things that an encounter with the risen Christ achieved.

We will consider each of the above in turn over the coming days.

Mary is a prototype of what we are all to be. Like Mary we too are to be witnesses of the risen resurrected Christ.
To make known the amazing news that Jesus is alive forever more. Hallelujah!!
Our lives testifying to the transforming power of an encounter with the risen Christ.
Disciples, making disciples, of the nations (Matthew 28:18-20).

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I making Jesus known?
  • What aspects of my life give testimony to the risen Lord?
  • Meditate upon the transformational power of an encounter with the resurrected Christ.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending Your Son to conquer sin & death,
And that You were in Him reconciling me to Yourself.
Jesus thank you that You rose to bring me new life,
In & through Your resurrection power.
Holy Spirit keep me actively testifying of the risen Lord,
Faithfully worshipping & fearlessly witnessing to make Jesus known.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
