The Voice of the Lord

The Lord our God is the one true & living God – He sees, hears & speaks.
We see this clearly throughout the Bible. At significant times the Lord speaks.
God speaks at different times & in different ways. We will be looking at those various ways.
The key thing is to hear, heed & obey the voice of the Lord.

and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.” Exodus 15:26

Scripture encourages us to diligently heed the voice of the Lord which means He must be speaking & able to be heard.
When we hear & heed God’s voice, we can do what is right in his sight. We can live in God’s world God’s way.
God’s voice is predominantly heard through Scripture & the Holy Spirit.
He also speaks through creation, through which He has clearly made Himself known (Romans 1:20-21).

There are 5 key ways to discover & discern the voice of the Lord.

  • Commanding Scripture
  • Compelling Spirit
  • Counsel of the saints,
  • Common Sense
  • Circumstantial signs

Scripture carries the most weight & is the place we weigh everything else against.

God’s voice comes in differing ways. We will be exploring:

  • His voice of power, majesty & glory
  • His shout
  • His still small voice
  • His thundering
  • His voice of many waters
  • His voice that shatters & scatters the enemy
  • His voice that shakes the earth
  • His voice which is knowable & to be closely followed.

God speaks in different ways & it is our responsibility to hear & heed what He is saying.
To be those that listen well & obediently follow His voice – hearers & doers (Matthew 7:26).
That is how we live wisely & well on the solid rock & foundation of God’s truth & counsel. SELAH
To that end we need to have a humble heart like the young lad Samuel (1 Samuel 3:9-10).
Speak Lord for your servants are listening. Hallelujah!!!

For Reflection

  • How easily do you hear the voice of the Lord?
  • In what ways do you hear the Lord speaking?
  • Meditate upon the voice of the Lord.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are the one true & living God,
That you see, hear & speak, & are speaking unto me.
Jesus thank you that You speak tenderly & lovingly into my life,
That Your voice is knowable & leads me into Your love, light & life.
Holy Spirit teach & train me to recognise & respond to the voice of the Lord,
That I might be a hearer & doer of Your words of life & truth.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
