Who was, and is, and is, to Come!

John’s revelation introduces us to a new term for the Lord God who is Father, Son & Holy Spirit.
That term John uses is the One who was and is and is to come. It is unique to the book of Revelation (Revelation 1:4&8, 4:8,11:17).
A unique term for the God of gods, Lord of lords & King of kings. In all creation & this universe there is nobody else like the Godhead.
The doxology that it is part of is rich in powerful imagery of how the Trinity execute & bring about the eternal plan of salvation.
Today we will conclude this series by summing up what we have explored.

Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, ………………. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:4 & 8

The Lord God Almighty is past, present & future – who was and is and is to come.
He exists eternally & is creator, redeemer & judge of all. The One with no beginning or end.
He created the earth & all that is in it & His creative power continues as He sustains all things (Colossians 1:15-18).
He saved us through Christ the Saviour & He is saving us now through sanctification of the Spirit (2 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Peter1 :2).
He will save us & the earth when He returns to judge the living & the dead (Romans 8:19-23; 2Timothy 4:1; 1Peter 4:5).
Satan & evil will be vanquished forever & God’s New Creation will come in all its fullness (Revelation 21 & 22).

Father, Son & Spirit are ‘the one who was and the one who is and one who is to come’ & they are Holy.
Holy, Holy, Holy is the repeated cry of Revelation. Here is the One who alone is worthy of our worship.
We worship the Father who is the source of salvation & we worship Jesus Christ the Son who was the sacrifice for our salvation.
We also worship the Spirit who is the power source (resurrection power) of our salvation.
We worship the Three in One & One in Three who saved us, are saving us & will save us. SELAH
We join with all of heaven in worshipping the Lord who alone is forever holy & worthy. Hallelujah!!!

As kings & priests unto our God (Revelation 1:6, 5:10; 1 Peter 2:9) we have the awesome task of being His worshippers & witnesses.
Such great privilege but also an amazing responsibility. God works in us & He works through us. SELAH
Our worship rises heavenward but our witness is earthbound.
Unless we are heavenly (kingdom) minded we can be of no earthly use for the Lord!!!
We don’t just join in with heaven’s ceaseless worship we also seek to bring heaven to the earth (Matthew 6:10).
This is not just our model prayer it must become our daily practise. SELAH
Worshippers & witnesses of the One who was, the One who is and the One who is to come. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I giving thanks unto & worshipping the Lord?
  • Do I relate comfortably & well to each member of the Godhead – Father, Son & Holy Spirit? SELAH
  • Meditate upon, & worship, the One who was and is and is to come.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are uniquely & forever the eternal God,
The One who was and is and is to come.
Jesus thank you for ALL you have done, are doing & will do for me,
For the endless & limitless supply & flow of Your love, grace & peace.
Holy Spirit keep me faithfully serving & worshipping the Lord,
Using my gifts & talents that my lips & life might be a powerful witness.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
