Thought for the Week – W/C – 7th Aug 2023

Body Perfect – Staying is Spiritual Shape

We live in an age where the world values perfect bodies.
As a result, fitness & well-being are billion-dollar industries.
Physical fitness is undoubtedly beneficial, but godliness is far more valuable to us (1 Timothy 4:8).
There are several ‘body’ areas we can concentrate on to stay in spiritual shape.
That will be the focus for this week’s Thought for the Week.

For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 1 Timothy 4:8

There are exercise regimes & eating habits that will provide you with a general level of fitness.
Spiritually we could parallel this type of approach with daily bible reading & prayer alongside
worshipping regularly with other Christians.
There are more bespoke & dedicated workouts & diets to address specific physical training needs.
Spiritually there are a few body parts/areas that Scripture outlines as needing careful & constant
Knowing & applying the Scriptures rightly & being obedient to the Spirit’s direction are the key things here.

SOUND SPEECH (Colossians 4:6; James 3:1-12)

We are repeatedly warned to guard our lips & be careful in our speech.
A small body part that can have seriously powerful impact!!
May our speech be ever full of grace & seasoned with salt (purity).

PURE HEARTS (Psalm 24:4; Hebrews 10:22)

We are also to guard our hearts & keep them pure before the Lord.
A soft, responsive submissive heart is what the Lord desires.
May our heart stay healthy & true unto the Lord.

CLEAN HANDS (James 4:8, Job 17:9)

We are encouraged to keep our hands clean at all times & in every way.
To be mindful of what we are always doing & thinking (attitudes & actions).
May our hands be cleansed & fit for the Lord’s purposes.

RENEWED MINDS (Romans 12:2)

We live in a world that in so many ways rebels against & rejects the Lord’s will, word & ways.
We therefore need to be constantly renewing our minds.
Filling our minds with the truth & values of God’s word. Enscripturated skulls & bibline blood!!

BEAUTIFUL FEET (Isaiah 52:7; Romans 10:15)

We are those who are bearers & bringers of the good news of the gospel.
Kingdom heralds for King Jesus. Our feet need attention to keep us missional & active as witnesses.
May we be faithful to keep making Jesus known.
Our spiritual bodies & health will benefit from attention to each one of these areas.
Just as our physical bodies need constantly looking after & caring for so do our spiritual lives.
Only you can make that happen effectively. You carry the core responsibility for you. SELAH

Take one of these 5 areas & Scripture passages on each of the next 5 days & ask the Lord to speak to you through it.

For Reflection

  • How balanced is my spiritual life?
  • Which part of my spiritual body would benefit from an ‘individual’ workout?
  • Meditate upon the importance of Spiritual fitness.

A piece of Musing and Song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that I am fearfully & wonderfully made,
That you expertly created me & perfectly care for me.,
Jesus thank you that You gave Your body for me salvation,
That through Your great love You died so that I might go free & love forever with You.
Holy Spirit keep me spiritually healthy & whole,
Teach & train me in the will, word & ways of the Lord.
In Jesus mighty Name.
