Thought for the Week – W/C – 21st August 2023

Overcomers ‘In Christ’

The Bible , particularly the New Testament, talks a lot about overcoming & overcomers.
Jesus is the great overcomer & we overcome in, & through, Him.
In this life there are many toils & troubles to overcome.
The great news & strong encouragement is that ’In Christ’ we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37).
Through Jesus, & His great love, we have an overwhelming victory – Hallelujah!!
That will be the focus for this week’s Thought for the Week.

For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. Romans 5:17

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith. 1 John 5:4

We overcome the world, the flesh & the devil through Jesus Christ & our continuing faith in Him.
The blood of the Lamb, the word of our testimony & loving not our lives (for His sake) are the keys to overcoming (Revelation 12:11).
Together with active ongoing faith they enable us to live in the victory we have in Christ.
We will have both trouble & persecution in this life but through Christ we can & will overcome (John 16:33, John 15:20).
Christ overcomes sin, death, the world & the power of evil & we experience the victory (overcoming) in Him.

Revelation is the great Biblical book of overcoming. Overcoming individually & corporately ‘In Christ’.
Great promises are made to the overcomers in the letters to the 7 churches (Revelation 2:7,11,17,26; 3:5:12;21).
Seven promises (fullness/completion/ perfection) looking ahead to the rewards & inheritance when Christ returns & the kingdom fully comes.
2 of the seven churches are commended & the 2 witnesses (Revelation 11) complete world evangelisation.
There is a strong suggestion here that an overcoming portion of the church will usher in the end of the church age.
They will be the vanguard & faithful remnant that ushers in the full & final blessing of God for all believers.

These overcomers are those that learn how to live in the victory we have ‘In Christ’.
Some stay content with salvation but the overcomers seek to lay hold of all that God has for them in this life.
They are those that will receive the rewards & inherit all things (Revelation 21:7).
How they live matters & these overcomers make a difference for the Kingdom because they know their God & do exploits (Daniel 11:32).
They reign in life through the One Man Jesus Christ & stay fully faithful as worshippers & witnesses.
Don’t you want to be one of those overcomers. SELAH

Look up a scripture about overcoming each day this week & ask the Lord to speak to you through it.

For Reflection

  • Do I think & see myself as an OVERCOMER?
  • Where am I experiencing the victory of God in Christ in my life right now?
  • Meditate (one each day) upon the promises to the overcomers in the letters to the seven churches.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that ‘In Christ’ I am an overcomer,
Strengthen & deepen my faith to keep overcoming the world, the flesh & the devil.
Jesus thank you that in You is the victory of God,
And that I am more than a conqueror through You & Your great love.
Holy Spirit keep me spiritually pure, staying close to Christ & desiring all the Lord has for me,
Keep me faithful & active as a worshipper & witness of God,
That I may reign in life through Jesus Christ.
In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
