The Testimony of Jesus

The book of Revelation is all about the revealing (revelation) of Jesus Christ.
The author John is exiled on the island of Patmos for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
John talks about the tribulation, kingdom & patience of Jesus Christ & I want to think about each of these in turn.
However, before that I have a few other thoughts to share today.

I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ,
was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, saying,
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send
it to the seven churches which are in Asia Revelation 1:9-11a NKJV

John was so passionate & active in making Jesus known that the authorities tried to silence him on a secluded island.
This was their attempt to stop Him testifying about & making Jesus known. It didn’t work!!!
There is no place where God cannot reach us & make us effective in His service. Hallelujah!!!
From a secluded island John is still speaking to millions of people today. SELAH
He is doing this through his written testimony of the revelation of Jesus Christ.
God, through John’s writings, is still touching & transforming hearts & lives today – nearly 2000 years later!!
God is always able to do far more in & through us than we could ever hope or imagine (Ephesians 3:20-21).

Note also how John refers to himself as a brother & companion in the Lord’s work.
Once again, as we have seen in previous TFD’s, we are family on mission together.
Despite being exiled in isolation John is strongly aware of the family ties.
We are together as family in the good & successful times & also the tough & difficult times.
Wonderfully the Lord is always present with us, wherever we are & whatever we are facing (Hebrews 13:5).

Finally, for today, note how John is a man of both Spirit & Scripture.
He is in the Spirit on the Lord’s day (verse 10). Alert & attentive to respond to the Lord’s voice.
John is seeing & hearing things in a vision which he writes down (verses 10 & 12). This is the Scripture we read today.
John’s spiritual senses are sensitive & sharp & he has learnt how to use them effectively.
We are all to be people of the Spirit & Scripture. Together they are powerful moulders & shapers to make us like Jesus.
Combined with time in the Lord’s presence they are the most potent forces that conform us to the image of the Son (Romans 8:29).
Moving & flowing in the Spirit & being shaped by Scripture. That is the divine design for each & every one of us. SELAH

For Reflection

  • In what ways is the Lord getting & keeping my attention?
  • How confident am I that the Lord can touch & transform people’s lives through me?
  • Meditate upon how powerful the testimony of Jesus is.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You fully reveal yourself in the Saviour Jesus Christ,
Draw me deeper & deeper into Your inexhaustible love, light & life.
Jesus thank you that You are the Risen Lord & King of Glory,
Give me strength & patience in the tribulation of Your Kingdom.
Holy Spirit teach & train me to use my spiritual senses well,
Discerning the Lord’s call & direction for my life, ministry & mission.
This I ask in Jesus mighty Name.
