The Power of Prayer

Prayer is powerful because it is communion & communication with God.
Wonderfully through the sacrifice of Jesus we can approach our Heavenly Father in prayer – anytime & anywhere.
The Lord always hears us, heeds us & sends forth His answers to our prayers (yes, no, maybe or wait).
We have looked at 4 S’s that James outlines as areas for prayer. These cover every circumstance of life!!
A fifth S is inferred when James talks about the powerful prayer of Elijah causing a drought for over 3 years.
Today we will think about how we are to pray in line with Scripture.

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit. James 5:17-18 NKJV

Elijah was an ordinary human being like you & I, yet his prayer received an amazing supernatural answer.
Elijah on the back of prayer was able to prophecy that it would not rain until he declared that it would.
The drought that followed lasted for over 3 years. Yet when Elijah declared so it rained & rained!!!
How was this possible? It was the combination of being a righteous man & looking in the right place for guidance.
Elijah found that guidance in the Scriptures (Deuteronomy 11:16-17, 28:23-24).
The Lord had warned that droughts would result if the people of Israel disobeyed the will & ways of the Lord.
Elijah was praying with divine inspiration allied with revelation from the scriptures. SELAH

Elijah prayed with faith & he prayed with passion & fervency. There was an energy & intensity about his prayers.
He was energized, earnest & intent in his prayers as he was enraged (righteous anger) about Israel’s idolatry & apostasy.
He prayed in response to what he was feeling in his heart & also in response to the prophetic word of the Lord.
In addition, he prayed fully in line with scripture. He knew the Word of God & he prayed the Word of God.
Our prayers garner power when we align them fully with Scripture. SELAH

For Reflection

  • Reflect upon a time when you received a supernatural wonder & miracle form the Lord.
  • How often do you use the word of God in your prayers?
  • How confident am I to ask big & bold things of the Lord?
  • Meditate upon the place & power of Scripture in our prayers.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are the Lord who always hears our prayers,
And that You work wonders & miracles in response.
Jesus, thank you that through Your sacrifice upon the cross I am restored to relationship with God,
And that I can approach Him in prayer anytime & anywhere.
Holy Spirit give me discernment & understanding in the Word of God,
So that I can pray with divine inspiration & revelation.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Amen
