Train your Spiritual Senses
The Lord eternally exists in a Triune community of love & we are triune beings too – body, soul & spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
The natural often precedes & foreshadows the spiritual. We have physical senses & we also have spiritual senses.
They need to be trained & developed so that we can more easily & readily respond to the Lord.
We repeatedly see people operating through spiritual senses in the Bible.
Ezekiel is one such example & we will use his experience of moving in the spirit to learn from.
And the Lord said to me, “Son of man, mark well, see with your eyes and hear with your ears, all that I say to you concerning all the ordinances of the house of the Lord and all its laws. Mark well who may enter the house and all who go out from the sanctuary. Ezekiel 44:5 NKJV
Ezekiel is receiving a prophetic vision of the temple of the Lord.
In this vision (which is yet to be fully fulfilled) he sees, hears & understands.
Through careful attention Ezekiel receives & records the divine revelation.
Twice Ezekiel is told to ‘mark well’ what the Lord is revealing to him.
This can also be translated as SET YOUR HEART. SELAH
A proper positioning of the heart & spirit is essential if we are to properly exercise our spiritual senses.
Ezekiel has to be awake, alert & attentive in his spirit man.
The Lord instructs Ezekiel to respond in 3 ways to the revelation being released:
- PAY ATTENTION
- LOOK CAREFULLY
- LISTEN CLOSELY
We will think more around these 3 instructions over the coming days.
We are to be people who live from the inside out. From our spirit to our soul & through our body (Psalm 42:11; 43:5).
This is in stark contrast to the way we lived before we became Christians!! It’s a daily battle (Galatians 5:16-18).
Christians (saints) are called to live another way – in faith, ‘In Christ’, in love, in wisdom, in the light, in the Spirit.
The more we practice the easier it becomes. Practice makes perfect!!
Let us be those who are awake to, alert to & paying full attention to the Lord.
Sharp & strong in the use of our spiritual senses. Hallelujah!!
- How good am I at exercising my spiritual senses?
- How often do I see, hear of discern things in the Spirit?
- Meditate upon how & why we might further develop our spiritual senses.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you that I am made – body, soul & spirit – in your image,
Help me to relate to & respond to You more intimately.
Jesus thank you that You are fully committed to my growth & development,
And that your goal is to make me more & more like You.
Holy Spirit teach & train me to use my spiritual sense more effectively,
That I may pay attention, look carefully & listen closely to the Lord.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
