Tidings of Comfort and Joy

Submission of the Sages.

Tidings of comfort & great joy were announced by angels In Bethlehem.
The Lord God used other means to reach a wider audience.
Through a super-star God miraculously led Magi from the East to come & meet the Christ-Child & New Born King.
As the incarnation took place these Sages from afar came offering extravagant gifts & humble worship.

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” Matthew 2:1-2 NKJV

God spoke to these wise men through a miraculous star. They knew exactly what it meant.
They came, following the star, searching for & seeking out the newborn King of the Jews.
God is able to speak to each & every one of us in a way that we can relate to & understand.
How amazing is that. God knows how to get & hold your attention!! SELAH
Unsurprisingly, in searching for a king, they headed to the capital Jerusalem & the royal palace.
This caused quite a stir & significant disruption in Herod’s court & all Jerusalem (Matthew 2:3).
Again, via the Jewish scribes’ knowledge & then the star, God led them to Christ in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:4,5 & 10).
In doing this the Lord also kept them & Him safe from Herod’s clutches (Matthew 2:12-15).
How wonderful the providence, provision & protection of our faithful God. SELAH

These sages were people of considerable resource. They were happy to bear the cost in time, effort & finances.
They also brought extravagant gifts. Gold, frankincense & myrrh (Matthew 2:11). Costly yes but prophetic too.
They came to pay proper homage & to worship the new-born King. They were ready & prepared.
Despite their significant social standing they bowed down in humble worship to truly honour the King of kings (Matthew 2:11).
Do we do the same when we come to worship Christ our King. SELAH
To worship means to bow down & literally to kiss the feet!! An act of unwavering devotion & adoration.

As they worshipped the wise men offered their gifts to Christ. Practical & prophetic.
Gold for a king, frankincense for a deity & myrrh as a symbol of death. Wealth yes but full of prophetic wisdom too.
They recognized Christ’s Kingship, spoke unto His divinity & had insight into His sacrificial death. SELAH
It is a mystery how these Gentiles from afar knew so much about the Christ child, but God’s ways are so different to ours (Isaiah 55:8).
In summing up these amazing tidings of comfort & joy let us reflect on Mary’s, the shepherds’ & these kings’ contributions.
Mary hosted God’s presence; the Shepherds heralded Him & the Magi paid homage unto the King of Kings.
We are to do all 3 of these as we live & walk with Christ the Saviour. What a wonderful privilege & responsibility.
Keep on being a faithful witness & keep bowing down in worship. Hallelujah!!! Glory to God in the highest.

For Reflection

  • What am I bringing as a gift for my Saviour, King & Lord?
  • In what ways am I paying true homage unto Christ the King of kings & Lord of Lords?
  • Meditate upon what it means to pay true homage unto Christ the Lord & King.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for Your mighty providence, that You are my provider & protector,
And that You faithfully watch over my life & keep me safe in the shadow of Your wings.
Jesus, King of Kings I exalt & magnify Your holy Name.
You alone are worthy of my praise & adoration.
Holy Spirit keep me faithfully witnessing of & truly worshipping Christ the King,
So that others may see & come & worship Him too.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
