Jesus encourages & instructs us to build our lives on the truth & wisdom of His (God’s) words.
This is the only way to guarantee a sure, certain & solid foundation.
Both builders in this parable were building to stay safe & secure amidst the storms of this life.
Both used similar materials, but one took a faster & easier route by building foundations upon the sand.
Today I want to think about some of the impact & cost of building upon the rock.
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.
Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” Matthew 7:24-27 NLT
We have noted how both houses had similar materials & were affected by the same elements of nature.
The only difference was what the foundations were built upon & also built into – sand or rock.
The foolish builder built upon the sand. It was the quicker & easier way to erect a house.
He built fast & moved in quickly & the house stood safe & firm whilst the sun shone.
Unfortunately, the foundations were not built upon solid secure ground & when the storms raged, they were found wanting.
The fall & crash amidst the storm as the house was swept away was devastating.
The easiest & fastest routes or pleasures in life are not always the best in the longer term. SELAH
The wise man choose to spend more time, effort & cost in constructing his house.
He built on the rock which took much more time, effort & likely expense.
However, when the storms of life came his home stood firm upon the solid, steadfast rock.
His wise longer-term investment reaped a handsome reward. His extra labour was not in vain. SELAH
We will always reap what we sow in this life (Galatians 6:7-8).
Sow wisely by building upon Christ & the Word of God.
There is a cost & sacrifice to make when we base & build our lives upon Christ & the Word of God.
The cost is daily putting off the old man with its fleshly, sinful nature (Ephesians 4:22; Colossians 3:9).
The sacrifice is daily offering our lives as living sacrifices in the Lord’s service (Romans 12:1-2).
This will mean we guard our hearts & mouths, keep careful company & seek to live a godly life.
There are things we will choose not to do or say & places or pursuits we will not visit or engage in.
Short term sacrifices that will reap long term benefits. Daily discipline & diligence that in due course brings lasting reward.
Those benefits pay handsome dividends when the storms of life hit. SELAH
Keep building upon & standing firm upon the unshakeable foundation that is Christ. Hallelujah!!
- How discerning am I when planning & choosing strategies to base & build my life upon?
- In what ways am I willing to invest time & effort for a longer-term reward in both life & eternity?
- Meditate upon the sacrifice & cost involved in building one’s life upon Jesus.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you that You are my strength & security, my shield & song,
The Solid Rock to build & base my life upon.
Jesus thank you that You are my firm foundation,
The One I can fully trust each day to bring a blessed present & even brighter future.
Holy Spirit keep me building wisely & investing for godly gain,
Hearing, heading & putting into practise the wisdom & truth revealed through, & by, Christ.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
