His Love Endures Forever

Psalm 136 exhorts us to give thanks to the Lord that His faithful love endures forever.
Other Psalms pick up this great refrain too – notably Psalm 118.
Twelve times Psalm 136 extols & encourages the attitude of gratitude.
The people of God are to be constantly giving thanks unto the Lord, the Great God above all other gods.
Psalm 136 also praises & celebrates the Lord as Creator, Redeemer, Provider & Protector.
Yesterday we looked at God our Creator & today we will focus upon God our Redeemer.

Give thanks to him who killed the firstborn of Egypt.
His faithful love endures forever.
He brought Israel out of Egypt.
His faithful love endures forever.
He acted with a strong hand and powerful arm.
His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to him who parted the Red Sea.
His faithful love endures forever.
He led Israel safely through,
His faithful love endures forever.
but he hurled Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea.
His faithful love endures forever.
Give thanks to him who led his people through the wilderness.
His faithful love endures forever. Psalm 136:10-16 NLT

After praising God as Creator this Psalm then emphasizes how the Lord is also the Redeemer of His people.
God rescues & delivers his people from their enemies & those who oppress them.
The Psalm remembers & celebrates the great deliverance & rescue that came through the Exodus.
How Israel was delivered form the tyranny of Pharaoh & bondage of slavery.
The writer highlights how the Lord safely led His people trough both the Red sea & the wilderness.
As He did so the Lord overcame & defeated that enemies of Israel (God’s people). SELAH

The Psalm is a Redemption hymn celebrating the miraculous deliverance of God’s people.
God’s strong hand & powerful arm are seen acting on behalf of His cherished people.
In delivering His people, Israel, the Lord also judges Pharaoh & Egypt.
The God of redemption saves His people & judges evil. Mercy & judgement hand in hand!!
God’s mighty power miraculously bringing about His purposes. SELAH

God’s faithful love is eternal & everlasting, it endures forever.
It is demonstrated in the Lord’s deep devotion & fervent passion for His people.
Israel was delivered from the tyranny of Pharaoh & bondage of slavery through the Exodus.
Christians are delivered from the tyranny of death & bondage of sin through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.
A New Exodus & Return from Exile through Christ (the second Adam) the Redeemer of humanity. SELAH
The Lord’s great love grace, goodness & mercy know no bounds or limitations.
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • How has the Lord delivered me form the bondage of sin & enemy oppression? Share testimony of this.
  • In what ways do I daily give thanks unto the Lord?
  • Meditate upon God our Redeemer & His wondrous work of deliverance & salvation (rescue).

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your great love for Your people,
That you are the God of Redemption with a mighty outstretched arm for Your beloved children.
Jesus thank you that You died in my place upon Calvary,
To free me from sin & deliver me from the enemy of my soul.
Holy Spirit keep me ever thankful of the Lord my redeemer,
Celebrating with joy & gladness His great & glorious name.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Amen
