Thought for the week

God is Love

God is love. It is the heart & core of His divine nature. He loves at all times & in all ways.
All His other attributes are tempered through His great & mighty love.
The Old Testament talks of God’s (hesed) loving kindness & the New Testament His unconditional (agape) love.
It is God’s great love that motivated Him to create us & to redeem us (Genesis 1:26-27; John 3:16).
All God is & all He does is satiated & saturated in His amazing, unfailing, enduring love.
Let us take time this week to ponder & prayerfully consider the wonder of the love of God.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God;
and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
In this the love of God was manifested toward us,
that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world,
that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God,
but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:7-11 NKJV

Love will be the defining characteristic & hallmark of the genuine Christian.
If we have encountered & experienced God & His awesome love then that love will change us & radiate in & through our lives.
God’s loves us too much to leave us in the state & condition that He found us.
We will be people who love God, love our neighbour & love one another (Matthew 22:36-40; 1 John 4:11).
Experiencing God’s love is a precious privilege which leads to an important responsibility.
We know His love, which He lavishes upon us (1 John 3:1) so that we can make known His love. SELAH
The love of God transforming our attitudes & actions as we are made more & more like Jesus.

The apostle Paul defines love in a famously well-known passage in 1 Corinthians 13.
He refers to it as the greatest gift that we receive from the Lord & the one thing that must be evident in all we say & do.
Love is the benchmark for all Christian living. This is not just a nice passage to be read at weddings!!!
It is an instruction manual for genuine Christian living. The Lord is seeking to perfect us in love (Matthew 5:48, 19:21). SELAH

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

God’s love in us is incredibly patient, enduring mistreatment as it transforms us in soul & spirit. Christ modelled this perfectly.
It is consistently kind, benevolent & overlooks offences. It is quick to forgive & readily seeks reconciliation.
God’s love in us celebrates the success & blessings of others & bestows honour & loyalty where it is rightly due.
It provides safety, security & shelter as well as seeking truth (reality) & justice.
God’s love in & through us persists, endures & overcomes. It never fails, falters or gives up. SELAH
It boosts faith, promotes hope & builds trust. It is incredibly powerful achieving more that we could ever hope or imagine.
Take time to meditate upon the various characteristics of God’s love in us each day this week.

God’s is love & His love is eternal. It will last forever & throughout all eternity.
It is the greatest of the Christian virtues (1 Corinthians 13:13) as it will endure forever.
In that sense it is the enduring link & steadfast bridge between this creation & God’s New Creation.
Faith will be fulfilled & hope will be realised but love will endure forever. Hallelujah!!
It is love that motivated the Lord to create & then redeem us. It is His love He has lavished upon us (1 John 3:1).
The Lord will never stop loving us. He has maxed out His love upon us 24/7/365 for all eternity. Wow, wow, wow!!
He cannot love us anymore & He will not love us any less. So, so, good to know. GOD IS LOVE – Hallelujah!!!
Let us keep living in, walking in & moving in God’s amazing love (Ephesians 5:1-2).

For Reflection

  • In what ways do I daily experience the Lord’s great love for me?
  • How am I expressing God’s love & my love to others? How is it shaping & moulding my attitudes & actions?
  • Meditate upon what love is & what love is not.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your great love for Your beloved children & treasured possessions,
Revealed through Your Son & our Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus, my Lord & Saviour, thank you for Your faithful love, demonstrated so powerfully upon Calvary,
That in You, & through You, I can daily encounter & experience the amazing, unfailing, unending love of God.
Holy Spirit keep me living in & walking in the love of God,
Letting it seep & soak deeper & deeper into me to make me more & more like Jesus.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
