God’s Perfections

David praises the Lord’s great attributes of love, faithfulness, righteousness & justice in Psalm 36. The overflow of God’s glory radiating unto us meets our every basic human need – we are loved, protected, sheltered, have the warmth of His embrace, nurtured, provided with abundant food & drink & held in community (nb: children of men v7). We see all these portrayed in the imagery of this Psalm. Incredible!! Yesterday we focussed on the majesty of God’s righteousness, which is revealed to us, & gifted unto us, ‘In Christ’. Today we will think more on God’s justice (righteous judgment).

Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the great mountains;
Your judgments are a great deep;
O LORD, You preserve man and beast.
How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.
They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house,
And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.
For with You is the fountain of life;
In Your light we see light. Psalm 36:5-9 NKJV

David portrays God’s justice & judgements as being full of wisdom & as deep as the ocean. Truly vast & beyond our capacity to measure!! That is amazing as to this day humanity has never fully ventured to the deepest depths of the ocean & we are still discovering creatures that exist in that realm. God’s justice & righteous judgements are inexhaustible & beyond our current scope to fully investigate or comprehend!! SELAH We marvel at the Lord’s majesty & we must also live with His mystery.

God is the God of justice (Isaiah 30:18). It is who He is & part of His unchanging divine nature. His justice is always with righteous & just judgements & it just flows freely & effortlessly from Him. His righteousness (always doing the right thing) means He always makes right, wise & just decisions & judgements. That is why He is a righteous judge & can be trusted with all judgement (Genesis 18:25). This was true in Abraham’s day & it remains true in our day too. SELAH

The God of justice has committed all judgement unto His Son, & our Saviour, Jesus Christ (John 5:22-24). In Christ, & through Christ, God is putting & making all things right. We are heading towards a great & glorious day when though His wise & just judgment the Lord will make all things new (Revelation 21:5). The judge of all the earth will do what is right & just – nobody will be able to question it in any shape or form. All will agree & acknowledge that it is just & right. We can make sure we are on the right side of that just judgement by making sure we remain ‘In Christ’. SELAH Keep honouring the son & Saviour, Jesus Christ. Hallelujah!!!

For Reflection

  • How am I living a life that keeps honouring Jesus Christ?
  • In what ways am I demonstrating, & working for, the justice of God?
  • Meditate upon the depth & scale of Lord’s justice & just judgements.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are God of justice & righteous judge of all the earth,
That You are the One who always makes wise, right & just judgements.
Jesus, thank you that all judgement has been committed unto You,
That through Your saving power You are making all things right,
And that there will come a day when You make all things right & new.
Holy Spirit keep me living a righteous life honouring Christ my saviour,
And ever working for the justice of God in, & through, my life.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Amen
