The cost of Discipleship

Last week we focussed upon Christ’s call to Follow Me.
Becoming His disciples so that we might make disciples for Him.
One of the things we noted was that discipleship carries a cost.
This week we will therefore dig a little deeper into what that cost might be.
It is however worth starting with the good news that the benefits far outweigh the costs.
It is therefore a cost that is worth paying for the Lord is a rewarder of those who faithfully & diligently seek Him (Hebrews 10:35 & 11:6).
Dietrich Bonhoeffer has written an excellent book on this theme which is well worth a read.
Quoting Bonhoeffer – Salvation is free but discipleship will cost you your life. SELAH

So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” Mark 10 14:29-31 NKJV

Jesus promises that despite the costs there is great reward in following Him.
Reward in this present life (a hundredfold) & the blessing of eternal (fellowship & friendship with Father God) life in the age to come.
A hundredfold return is a mind-boggling return – just ask any farmer or gardener. SELAH
The preface truly/assuredly/assure you most solemnly is a way of expressing the importance of what Jesus is saying.
It is a way (used often by Jesus) of saying listen, & listen well, to what I ma saying as it is of vital importance.
Jesus has promised that there is great reward both now, & into eternity, in following Him.
The Lord’s promises never fail & can be fully trusted. Hallelujah!!

Jesus encouraged those who would follow Him to fully count the cost (Luke 14:26-33).
As we consider the cost, which comes daily, we will explore:

  • The need for determined focus
  • Total commitment
  • Turning away from a life of sin & putting on the New Man ‘In Christ’
  • Fully embracing a life of worship & witness

Discipleship requires dedication, discipline, diligence & attention to detail – day after day after day. SELAH

As we continue to follow Jesus let us be willing to suffer any costs & to enjoy the rich blessings & many rewards.
God’s blessings enrich our lives & He adds no sorrow with it. He is aways desiring & working for our greatest good & highest welfare.
Why wouldn’t anyone want to follow & serve such a loving Master & good, good Father. SELAH
Let us continue to follow Jesus as faithful disciples truly & fully committed to His cause & purposes.

For Reflection

  • In what ways have I benefitted from following Jesus?
  • How, when & where have I paid a cost for following Christ?
  • Meditate upon the cost of discipleship.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are a faithful rewarder of those who diligently seek You,
And that if I seek You with all my heart, I will surely find You.
Jesus, thank you for Your wonderful promise of blessing & reward as I follow You,
Thank you for all the good things You pour into, & through, my life.
Holy Spirit help me to wisely count any costs but to still steadfastly follow Christ,
Keep me persevering & pressing on in my daily pursuit of Christ.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
