Who is Jesus – John 1

We have seen how John introduces Jesus as the Eternal Word who is God, Creator, True Light & bringer of life & light.
John is building layer upon layer & revelation upon revelation of who Jesus is.
Jesus’ deity has been made clear & John continues by showing how Christ is fully man too.
John now reveals that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son, God made man – flesh & blood. Wow!!
Today we will look at how John highlights the Incarnation – Immanuel – God with us.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 NKJV

John makes it crystal clear that the Eternal Word, who was God, became flesh & blood.
In Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son, God became fully man. God clothed himself in humanity in Christ Jesus.
Jesus Christ, the Eternal Word is God in human form with all its limitations & vulnerabilities. It is just incredible.
The Son who is the one-of-a-kind, truly unique living expression of God is full of glory, grace & truth.
The glory of the Father revealed through the Son. The glory of God revealed through Jesus Christ.
John is saying that if you want to know what God is like just look at Jesus. SELAH

Christ is the only begotten Son. Begotten is an important word.
It means only, unique & is only used of sons & daughters.
It also denotes of the same substance & originating from.
Jesus originates from & is of the same substance as the Father.
He was not made or created but has eternally existed.
His humanity had a beginning in the Incarnation, but His divinity does not. SELAH

Jesus is the very substance & glory of God revealed to humanity in full human form.
Flesh, blood & bone in all its glory. He cries tears (John 11:35) & when you cut or pierce Him (John 19:34) he bleeds!!
God’s grace & truth were revealed through Him via His person as well as His words, works & wonders.
God fully identifies with humanity by becoming one of us. In, & through, Jesus Christ, God Himself came to save us (2 Corinthians 5:19).
How wonderful is that. Hallelujah!! Give glory to God.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I living in the grace & truth that Christ reveals?
  • How am I dwelling with and ‘tabernacling’ with the Lord?
  • Meditate upon Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son, fully man & fully God.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that in Christ You became man, fully revealing Your grace, truth & glory,
Thank you that You came to save me & adopt me into Your family,
Jesus, the only begotten Son, thank you that you humbled Yourself to become a man,
And that You conquered sin, death & evil so that through You I could too.
Holy Spirit keep me following Christ & His example,
Learning more & more like Jesus to daily live in full submission to You.
