Who is Jesus – John 1

John has spelt out to his readers how Jesus is both fully divine & fully human.
He is the bearer & bringer of light & life & the Anointed One – the Messiah.
God incarnate, come to save us, & fulfil all His promises to His people. Jesus Christ of Nazareth is that Man.
John the Baptist, Jesus’ forerunner & herald, now introduces another title that shows who Jesus is & what he does for us.
John now uses the title that the Baptist proclaimed which is the Lamb of God. This will be today’s theme.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.” John 1:29-31 NKJV

John the Baptist’s ministry was to prepare the way of the Lord.
It was He who revealed Jesus to Israel as the Lamb of God. John now point that out to us his readers.
Note though that Jesus’ mission & ministry is to the whole world, & not just to Israel.
Jesus focussed upon Israel & from there the salvation & light He brought was to flow to the nations.
Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away (lifts off & cleanses) the sins of the world. SELAH

John the Baptist cries out, Behold – take note, & John the author is wanting us to take note too.
Here is the Man / Mighty One of God who will be the sacrifice for the sins of humanity.
Jesus Christ, the Anointed One & Lamb of God will free man from the guilt & power of sin. Hallelujah.
John’s Jewish readers would have resonated the phrase ‘Lamb of God’ with the Passover lamb.
Jesus, God made man, is our Passover Lamb. Just mind blowing!! SELAH

John the Baptist’s testimony, which John the author points out to us, is that Jesus is greater/preferred to John.
Jesus is greater than John as He existed (eternally) before him & the scope & scale of Jesus’ ministry & mission is far greater too.
John prepared the way, Jesus made a way!! John revealed Jesus whilst Jesus revealed, in all His fullness, God Himself!!
John’s ministry was limited to Israel whilst Jesus’ is to the whole world!! John baptised with water & Jesus baptises with the Spirit!!
Jesus, the sacrificial Lamb of God, died to save you & me form the guilt & power of sin.
Give thanks & glory unto God for the wondrous gift of Christ & His great salvation. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I thanking the Lord for my salvation ‘In Christ’?
  • Am I truly free from sin’s guilt & power or are there issues or areas I continue to struggle & wrestle with?
  • Meditate upon Jesus Christ, our sacrificial ‘Lamb of God’.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending Jesus as the sacrificial lamb of God,
That in Him, & through Him, the sins of the world are lifted & taken away.
Jesus, Lamb of God, thank you that You gave Yourself sacrificially for me,
To free me from the guilt & power of sin. Hallelujah!!
Holy Spirit keep me living in the freedom for which Christ has set me free,
Walking in the love, light & life of the Lord.
In the mighty Name of Jesus.
