The Everlasting God

The everlasting eternal God establishes everlasting covenants.
Covenants are relational & involve binding promises.
They carry both relational privileges (promises) & kingdom responsibilities (expectations).
El-Olam establishes a number of everlasting covenants with His people.
Through his great faithfulness He keeps His every single promise & never breaks covenant.
Each covenant finds its fullest & perfect fulfilment in, & through, Christ.

The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” Genesis 9:16 NKJV

And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations,
for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you. Genesis 7:17 NKJV

Although my house is not so with God,
Yet He has made with me an everlasting covenant,
Ordered in all things and secure.
For this is all my salvation and all my desire;
Will He not make it increase? 2 Samuel 23:5

These covenants are established with individuals & extended to people groups & then to all humanity.
Through Noah an everlasting covenant is established where following the great flood God promises to never again destroy the earth & humanity.

Noah is a type of Christ & the ark points to the salvation to come through Him.
Through Abraham God promises an everlasting covenant where Abraham will be blessed to be a blessing & all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him.

Again a pointer to the saving ministry of Christ in whom we are blessed to be a blessing.
David is promised an everlasting covenant where his son (descendant) will rule over an everlasting kingdom.

Each of these great covenants contain binding, secure & certain promises that God will faithfully deliver.
Each & every one points to Christ – the one & only eternal saviour for mankind.
Every promise of God is yes & amen in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20).
Each covenant promise & each covenant itself finds its fulfilment & is perfected in Him.

Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20-21

The everlasting covenants of God find their fulfilment in the person of Christ.
Through His death & resurrection salvation is made available to all men.
Through Christ God is putting all things right – creation & all creatures (people & the planet).
His New Creation has started & will be fully manifested on the earth (Romans 8).
He is the great King who will exercise dominion through an everlasting Kingdom of peace (Isaiah 9:7)
How wonderful we get to enjoy the great blessings & mighty promises of all these covenants in & through Christ.

Hallelujah! How amazing is El-Olam the everlasting, eternal God.

For reflection

  • In what ways am I working out my covenant relationship with the Lord?
  • Am I faithful in my covenant responsibilities?
  • Meditate on the covenant promises.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you You are a covenant God,
That You faithfully fulfil every covenant promise,
In & through Your son, Jesus Christ, our saviour.
Thank you for the great relational privileges I enjoy with You,
Help me through the power of Your indwelling Spirit to be faithful in my covenant responsibilities.
In Jesus mighty name,
AMEN.
