The Pleasant Portion
David celebrates his special relationship with the Lord in Psalm 16.
Through a precious song of praise God is worshiped as David’s refuge, resource & redeemer.
David is mindful that he has a wonderful inheritance in & from the Lord.
The sheer joy of knowing God is a rich enough inheritance but with God being the God of abundance there is always more.
1 Keep me safe, O God,
for I have come to you for refuge.
2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Master!
Every good thing I have comes from you.”
3 The godly people in the land
are my true heroes!
I take pleasure in them!
4 Troubles multiply for those who chase after other gods.
I will not take part in their sacrifices of blood
or even speak the names of their gods.
5 Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing.
You guard all that is mine.
6 The land you have given me is a pleasant land.
What a wonderful inheritance!
7 I will bless the Lord who guides me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
8 I know the Lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
9 No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.
My body rests in safety.
10 For you will not leave my soul among the dead
or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.
11 You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever. Psalm 16 NLT
David delights in the wonderful inheritance he receives from the Lord.
He inherits the Lord himself, shares life with God & is blessed in a pleasant land.
Lord, land & life – wonderful.
It is a cup (portion) overflowing with blessing & abundance.
David describes the inheritance as a lot or portion that the Lord has gifted to him.
It has been divinely appointed & cast down unto David.
That gift & bounty has fallen in pleasant places.
It is something delightful, beautiful & lovely bringing joy & delight to David’s heart.
Rich reward for the children of God.
Our inheritance ‘In Christ’ is the overflow of Covenant relationship with the Lord (Romans 8:17).
We too inherit the Lord, His life (life eternal & everlasting John 3:16) & the whole earth (Matthew 5:5).
The King & His kingdom are ours forever (Luke 12:32).
It is the Father’s good pleasure to do this – to abundantly bless His children.
That relationship with God & the resulting inheritance that David highlights is one that is to be experienced & shared alongside others.
David not only delights himself in the Lord but also in the community of faithful believers.
He refers to them as saints, lovers of God, godly people, holy ones & divinely chosen.
What a joy & delight it is to belong to the family of God.
We are joint heirs with Christ & alongside our brothers & sisters in Christ.
We is far greater than me. Together we go & together we grow.
Let us keep delighting in the Lord & one another.
As we love one another He is made known (John 13:34-35).
Love the Lord, love His people, love the lost into the Kingdom.
- In what ways am I laying hold of my inheritance right now?
- How am I delighting in the Lord’s people, my brothers & sisters in Christ?
- Meditate on the Father’s amazing grace & abundant goodness to His children.
