Focus on the Lord

The Scriptures repeatedly exhort us to keep Jesus the key & main focus of our lives.
It is important as what we focus & dwell upon dictates our lives.
The Word of God exhorts us to fix our gaze (spiritual sight) & minds (thoughts & imaginations) on the Lord.

Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. Hebrews 12:1-2

The language in the Greek here talks about taking a good hard look.
At the same time it also speaks of fixing or fastening our thoughts.
Attentively considering & taking careful hold as our sight & thoughts work in tandem.
Eyes & minds on the prize – Jesus himself.

Again in this second Scripture we are alerted to the need to be deliberately & intentionally attentive.
To make those crucial choices to put Jesus first each moment of every day.
Jesus the centre of our thoughts & the object of our gaze.

We must daily, moment by moment, determine the direction of our thoughts & gaze.
Fixing & fastening them upon Jesus.
The mind is a battlefield (2 Corinthians 10:1-6) so let us direct it to the One in whom we have victory (1 Corinthians 15:57; 1 John 5:4).
Mediating & dwelling upon the truths & values of the Lord (Philippians 4:8).
So important we train our spiritual senses to set themselves fully upon Jesus.
Stay sharp, stay focused. Christ is the prize.

For Reflection

  • What or who is our gaze ‘fixed’ upon right now?
  • Where do my thoughts continual drift to?
  • Mediate on the power of choice & being intentional.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Through the power of Your indwelling Spirit,
Help me to fix & fasten my thoughts & gaze upon You alone.
Teach & train me to use my spiritual senses
To keep faithfully looking unto Jesus.
In Jesus mighty name,
Amen.
