This week we will continue to explore some of the things we are encouraged to remember by the Lord.
Today we will focus on the teachings & instructions of Christ.
We are to keep remembering them so that we can apply them to our lives.
We also have a great Helper as we seek to do this.
“These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble.
They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.
And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me.
But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. John 16:1-4
Jesus knew that life would be full of challenges, difficulties, trials, trouble & persecution for His people.
He teaches & instructs His followers so that we do not stumble in those times.
We are saved to persevere through suffering rather than be removed from it!!
In remembering His words & all that he teaches we are enabled to stand in the midst of every trial.
We must get to know what Jesus teaches & instructs if we are to remember it.
We therefore need to read, study, learn & memorize the words & teachings of Christ.
There are numerous places where the Scriptures exhort us to remember the words of Christ (Acts 20:35; 2 Peter 3:2).
Christ`s words are life & light to us & they require our constant attention.
The best place to engage with them is in the Gospels.
We neglect Christ’s words & teachings at our peril.
That is why it is a good discipline to engage with the Word of God daily.
The good news is that we are not alone in this task.
Jesus has arranged a special Helper for us.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name,
He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26
Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to teach us & help us remember all that He taught & instructed.
The key is to ask the Holy Spirit to bring his revelation & illumination to the Word of God & the teachings & truth of Christ.
Are we relying upon the Holy Spirit or trusting in our own intellects?
The Spirit is sent to us to equip & empower us but we must learn to hear & heed Him.
Working in partnership with the Holy Spirit (staying in step) to apply the truths of Christ to our everyday lives.
That is one of the key ways we overcome the world, the flesh & the devil (Ephesians 2:1-3).
Stay attentive to the words of Christ & keep aligned with the Holy Spirit.
Christ is the TRUTH (John 14:6) & His teaching & truth sets us free (John 8:32).
- Do I have a regular habit & discipline of engaging daily with the Word of God?
- Do I ask & rely upon the Holy Spirit to teach me & help me remember the words of Christ?
- Mediate upon the power & purity of Christ’s words to His people.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you for the power & purity of Your teachings & truth,
Thank you that in them is Your life & light.
Help me Holy Spirit to engage with them, to learn them, & to remember them,
Give we wisdom to apply Your words wisely,
So that I may live & walk in God’s world, God’s way.
In Your mighty name,
