Fit in, Stand out

We are now in the Advent season.
In Advent one of the things we remember & celebrate is the light shining in the darkness (John 1:1-9).
Christ the Light of the World (John 8:12).
Because of Christ’s light in us we those who are to stand out whilst we fit it.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?
It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16 NKJV

Jesus teaches the disciples that they are a distinctive people.
Their lives are to be different & to make a difference.
They are to live in this world with their lives an example to others – always ‘on show’
Their attitudes & actions expressed in ways that bring glory to God.
Shining from the inside out.

Salt preserves & it also gives flavour. It adds to & improves the taste of things.
Because the ‘light of the world’ resides in you your presence brings a purity & enhances any atmosphere you inhabit.
Light shines to dispel darkness. It illuminates & makes things clear.
Because of the light of Christ your presence lights up peoples lives & experiences.

The salt & light of the gospel is demonstrated through the good works that God has prepared for us to walk in (Ephesians 2:10).
May Christ’s light shine brightly through us as we declare & demonstrate the gospel through being salt & light.
Purifying, preserving, shining & showing how to live in God’s world, God’s way.
Fitting in & standing out in this Advent season.

For Reflection

  • Am I in faithfully reflecting & shining Christ’s light into this world?
  • How am I being salty? How bright is my light?
  • Mediate upon the Christ’s light that shines through you.

A song relating to the theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that in & through Christ your light shines in & through me,
Through the power of Your indwelling Spirit keep strong in flavour & shining brightly.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
Amen.
