Unto us a Son is given
Christ is God’s greatest gift to us.
Nearly 700 years beforehand Isaiah prophesied of Christ’s coming.
Isaiah also highlights some wondrous characteristics of Immanuel – God with us.
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
The great names reveal the glorious nature.
For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 NKJV
Jesus is not just a counsellor He is a wonderful counsellor.
Wise, godly, truth filled instruction for living in God’s world, God’s way.
He provides wondrous counsel through a variety of sources.
The counsel of the Word of God (Acts 20:27).
The word of God provides the boundaries for the will of God.
Everything we do needs to be tempered by & tested against the counsel of God’s word in Scripture.
So important we have a good grasp of the Scriptures – both Old & New Testament.
That is why it is a good discipline to daily read the Word of God & regularly read the whole of the Bible.
Jesus sends the Holy Spirit as our counselor (John 14:26).
The Holy Spirit is the spirit of counsel (Isaiah 11:2).
He counsels us in the word, ways & will of God.
What a wonderful resource – a helper, comforter, revealer of truth, counselor & intimate friend.
We also have the added safety net of godly counsel from one another.
The wise & trusted counsel that comes from fellow believers we know & trust.
In the multitude of counselors there is safety (Proverbs 11:14, 15:22, 24:6).
We are abundantly resourced by the Wonderful Counselor.
Immanuel ‘God with us’ in such an amazing way.
- What disciplines do I have in place to access the differing sources of the Lord’s wonderful counsel?
- How well am I responding to the counsel of the Lord?
- Mediate upon Jesus our Wonderful Counselor.
