Unto us a Son is Given

Mary & Joseph believed the promise of God & wholeheartedly committed to His plans.
Due to the Roman census that would mean a journey to Bethlehem.
90 miles or so walking distance for a heavily pregnant woman.
The Bread of Life (John 6:35) would be born in Bethlehem – the House of Bread.

At that time Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire.
When this first census took place, Quirinius was the governor of Syria.
Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own hometown.

Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David.
Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David.
He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him.
She was pregnant, and while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby.
She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger—there was no room for them to stay in the inn. Luke 2:1-7

A distant emperor calls for a census. More tax money in the imperial coffers.
A devoted husband torn between his duty as a good citizen & his concern & care for his heavily pregnant wife.
The journey would not be without its challenges & potential perils along the way.
Dilemmas & weighty decisions pressing in on Joseph’s heart & mind.

The enemy of souls is manipulating Caesar to fuel the mighty war machine that is Rome.
The plans of the enemy & the machinations of man cannot thwart the Lord’s eternal purposes.
The Lord is bringing forth His Champion – Christ our Saviour – to fulfill the ancient promises & prophecies.
The Ruler who will bring the true peace (SHALOM) that humanity craves (Isaiah 9:6-7).

God is journeying from heaven to earth via Mary’s womb.
Mighty God embracing the vulnerability & frailty of humanity.
The miracle of conception & human birth. The mystery of God made man.
Joseph & Mary are journeying upon the earth.
Facing perils & danger day & night at every turn of the road.
The marvel of their trust & obedient faith.
All roads leading to Bethlehem where these journeys are destined to change forever.
Miracle, mystery & marvel all rolled into one as the Saviour is born.
Divine sovereignty & human responsibility combining to bring forth Immanuel – God with Us.

For Reflection

  • How is your journey with Jesus enfolding at this time?
  • What has God entrusted you with right now?
  • Mediate upon the weighty responsibility that God entrusts to human hands.

A Song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the great gift of Christ our Saviour.
May we fully embrace the responsibilities You assign to us,
May we always be willing to pay the costs despite the perils & dangers we might face.
Through the presence & power of Your indwelling Spirit,
Help & strengthen us in our faith as we daily journey with You,
In the mighty name of Jesus.
