Unto us a Son is given
Like Elizabeth Mary also responds to the presence & power of the Holy Spirit.
She rejoices in the Spirit in response to the blessing & favour she is experiencing.
Her humble heart glorifying God through a powerful prophetic song.
A song of God news, good news & great news. Body, soul & spirit giving all unto the Lord.
And Mary said:
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
49 For He who is mighty has done great things for me,
And holy is His name.
50 And His mercy is on those who fear Him
From generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with His arm;
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
And exalted the lowly.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things,
And the rich He has sent away empty.
54 He has helped His servant Israel,
In remembrance of His mercy,
55 As He spoke to our fathers,
To Abraham and to his seed forever.”
And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house. Luke 1:46-56
Mary tells the story of how God has blessed her.
She also outlines how God has moved (from generation to generation) through mercy on behalf of His people.
The Kingdom & reign He brings is one of justice, joy & peace.
Powerful, proud, self-satisfied, haughty, oppressors will be brought down.
The hungry, meek & lowly will be filled & lifted up.
Mary prophetically knows the Saviour has come.
God’s great ancient promise & prophecy is being fulfilled (Genesis 3:15, 22:18).
God’s great love & mercy freely flowing to those who will reverently embrace Him.
Mary reveals a deep knowledge of God’s character & also the story & flow of Israel’s scriptures as she bursts forth into prophetic song.
She is both sensitive to the Spirit & saturated in the Word of God. So Good!!
So important we are people of both the word & spirit. Holding both in constant balance & equilibrium.
So important too that we function as a prophetic people (Numbers 11:29; Matthew 5:12).
God is ever on the lookout for those willing to be used prophetically in His service.
In Mary he found a willing humble servant. As it was for her, let it be for us.
Will we allow the Lord’s Spirit to move through us prophetically?
Will we give our all through body, soul & spirit to magnify His name?
Will we readily speak, shout & sing forth the wondrous story of God’s salvation in Christ?
The Holy Spirit is ever present to help us do all three. Hallelujah!!!
Thank you Lord for sending Jesus.
- How readily do I burst forth into praise?
- What song am I singing to the Lord right now?
- Do I feel blessed by the Lord?
- Mediate upon the nature of God’s kingdom revealed through Mary’s prophetic song.
A song related to the theme:
Thank you for the great gift of Christ our Saviour.
May our hearts & mouths ever shout forth & sing Your glorious praise.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
