Unto us a Son is given

After no guest rooms are available Mary & Joseph are most likely consigned to a multi-purpose lower floor room.
No guest room, little human compassion but heaven remains on their side.
The time had come, the contractions deepened, the waters broke & the travail began.
The pain of labour giving way to the joy & ecstatic delight of new life.
Jesus the Hope of the World was safely birthed from Mary’s womb.
The Heavenly Child, who is the promised Seed, Son & Saviour has come amongst us.
Immanuel – God with us.

At that time Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire.
When this first census took place, Quirinius was the governor of Syria.
Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own hometown.
Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David.
Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David.
He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him.
She was pregnant, and while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby.
She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger—there was no room for them to stay in the inn. Luke 2:1-7

The room they were given was a most likely a multi-purpose space.
A workshop by day & at night a sanctuary for frail or vulnerable animals.
It would have had a manger carved into the stone or bedrock of the house.
That was were the new born babe would be laid in His swaddling cloths.
The unblemished Lamb of God swaddled & laid to rest in a stone manger.

The Bread of Life (John 6:35) laid in a feeding trough.
Bethlehem – the House of Bread – received some altogether different Bread.
The Bread that feeds Eternal Life.
The Rock of Ages (Isaiah 26:4) laid in a stone manger.
The Rock (Romans 9:33; 1 Corinthians 10:4) who we build our lives upon laid in a rocky cradle!!
In the fullness of time (Galatians 4:4-5) God bringing forth His Son as our Saviour.
Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • Are we feeding on the Bread of Eternal Life?
  • Are our lives secure upon the solid rock who is Christ?
  • Mediate upon the wonder of our Saviour.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the great gift of Christ our Saviour.
Rock of Ages be our sure foundation,
Jesus, Bread of Life,
Feed us now & evermore.
Amen.
