Unto Us a Son is Given

After Jesus’ birth Mary & Joseph’s travels continued.
This time a journey with the new born babe to Jerusalem – some 40 days after Jesus’ birth.
From Bethlehem a mere 6 miles & if they Nazareth just over 90!!
This time to the temple to offer the firstborn Son unto the Lord (Numbers 18:15).
They redeemed Him with an offering of two young pigeons.

And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child,
His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.
Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed,
they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord
(as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”),
and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord,
“A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” Luke 2:21-24

Mary & Joseph were devout obedient Jews.
They circumcised the new born Jesus on the 8th day.
In obedience to the Lord’s command & instructions they named Him Jesus.
The name to reveal His divine purpose to save His people from their sins.
After Mary’s period of purification (Leviticus 12:1-5) they headed up to Jerusalem to present Him as an offering to the Lord.
All in accordance with the Law of the Lord.

The offering they gave for Jesus’s redemption was two young pigeons (or turtle doves Leviticus 12:8).
This highlights to us that they were a relatively poor family.
Quite clearly the Magi have not visited at this point as their costly treasures could have been used for the more costly offering of a lamb.
They offer Him up to the Lord & buy (redeem) Him back by sacrificing the pigeons.
Mary & Joseph brought a sin offering on behalf of Him who would later be slain as a sin offering for all humanity.
The Lamb of God identifying with the poor of the land & all of humanity.

Humble dutiful obedient service as loyal Jews yet how ironic that Mary & Joseph are redeeming the Redeemer.
A simple & sincere act on behalf of new parents yet such a powerfully veiled spiritual act.
Here is the Lord returning to His temple (Malachi 3:1-2).
Our Redeemer Lives.

For Reflection

  • Are we fully loyal to the ways & words of the Lord?
  • Are we fully compliant in our obedience to the Lord?
  • Mediate upon Jesus the Redeemer.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the great gift of Christ our Redeemer.
Thank you that You identify with us fully & meet us at where we are at.
Through the power & presence of Your indwelling Spirit,
Help & strengthen us to be fully loyal & obedient to You.
In Jesus mighty name,
