Unto Us a Son is Given

Whilst in the the temple faithfully carrying out the duties that the Law required Mary & Joseph bump into Simeon.
A man with the Holy Spirit on him & working through him, leading him & guiding him to Christ.
The prophet had a personal promise from God about to be fulfilled & also a prophetic message of blessing & battle for Mary & Joseph.

And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout,
waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him
by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him
according to the custom of the law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said:
“Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,
According to Your word;
For my eyes have seen Your salvation
Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,
A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel.”
And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. Then Simeon blessed them,
and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a
sign which will be spoken against (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Luke 2:25-35

God had promised Simeon that he would see the Christ (anointed Messiah) before he departed this earth.
Led by the Spirit Simeon finds & then embraces (takes up in his arms) Jesus the saviour.
Mary & Joseph marveled at the words spoken over Jesus.
God’s salvation for all people, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles & the glory of God’s people Israel.
(Isaiah 9:2, 40:5, 42:6, 49:6, 51:4, 60:1-3 Jesus the suffering servant of God)
Powerful prophetic words revealing the destiny of the Holy Child.
The Redeemer & Saviour of not just Israel but the whole of humanity.
O what a mighty saviour. Light of the World & the Glory of Israel. HALLELUJAH!!

Simeon has prophetic foresight into what the future holds for this child & all humanity.
A man deeply, deeply sensitive & totally surrendered to the Holy Spirit who is working on, in & through him.
Jesus will be lifted up & laid down as a sign & He will hold the destinies of all in His hands.
Their rising (resurrection) or falling (destruction) dependent upon their response to the miracle sign of the cross & resurrection.
Jesus the great revealer of EVERY heart.
Simeon also had a personal prophetic word for the couple – particularly Mary.
In releasing prophetic blessing to them it was tinged with bitterness.
There will be pain & sorrow involved in the offering they are bringing & the service they will give.
A sword will pierce her soul – Mary’s great anguish, pain & sorrow at the cross.
Life for them, & for us, is a constant mix of blessings & battles.

Like Simeon we can only depart this live in peace & contentment when we have embraced Jesus the Saviour.
Like Mary & Joseph in our journey with Christ there will be pain & suffering along the way.
May we like Simeon be totally surrendered to the Holy Spirit.
May we like Mary & Joseph humbly & faithfully embrace the cost of the call of God on our lives.
May our hearts be ever submitted & responsive to Christ our Saviour.

For Reflection

  • Are we fully surrendered to the Holy Spirit?
  • Are we aware of prophetic words form the Lord that are yet to be fulfilled in, or for, us?
  • Are we willing to pay the cost of the call of God on our lives?
  • Mediate upon Jesus the miracle sign & revealer of hearts.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the great gift of Christ our Redeemer.
Thank you that His death & resurrection is our death & resurrection.
Thank you that His life is our life.
Through the power & presence of Your indwelling Spirit,
May our hearts be ever responsive to You.
In Jesus mighty name,
Amen.
