Shelter in a Time of Storm

Jesus the Prince of Peace is our shelter & salvation amidst the storms of life.
Whether external or internal in nature He brings His peace to us as He stills the storms we face in life.
Jesus the Lord of ALL who speaks & tames the raging seas & howling winds.
He who had perfect peace amidst the storm had the authority to speak peace to the storm.
Peace – Be Still.

Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum.
And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing.
So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid.
But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”
Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going. John 6:16-21 NKJV

In John’s gospel we read of another occasion when the disciples where struggling against the elements on the sea of Galilee.
Struggling & straining at the oars they were battling against the strong winds & rising sea.
Jesus comes to them walking on the water!! He speaks peace to their fearful hearts.
His presence was the answer to the hardship & struggle they were experiencing.
Hear His voice & word to you today – It is I do not fear.
He is with you to carry you to your desired destination.

The disciples were struggling to make headway against a fierce squall on the sea of Galilee.
This happened despite them being experienced fishermen who knew how to handle boats.
As soon as Jesus joins them the whole situation changes. His presence in the boat made all the difference.
Almost instantly what was a considerable struggle with very slow progress becomes an easy ride.
Immediately they arrive safe at the shore. The destination achieved with ease.
(They were about half way across the lake prior to Jesus joining them!)
A supernatural acceleration has taken place through Jesus’ presence.

The disciples had to willingly receive Jesus into the boat.
They had to rise up in faith to overcome their fear & doubt to do that
As soon as they did His presence, peace & authority came to bear & influenced all around.
Jesus took complete control of the situation, turned it around & took away all the strain & struggle.
Jesus restored calm as He took over the handling of their situation. He carried them safe to shore.
He calmed the wind & waves & He calmed the disciples hearts & minds too.
What He did for the disciples then He can do for us now.

Jesus comes to us in our struggles & storms. He walks to our aid to provide shelter & salvation.
He calls to us to welcome Him into all we ware experiencing no matter how hard the struggle is.
As the Lord of all, He brings peace, He brings authority & He brings power.
Will we welcome Him into our boat & trust Him to turn things around?
Will we let Him bring calm to our chaos, clarity to our confusion, courage to our fear & conviction to our doubt?
Will we allow Him to handle & control the situation & then lead us safe to shore?
Jesus, the Lord of all, is the one who can lead & carry us through the squalls & storms of life to a safe destination.

For Reflection

  • Do I need to welcome Jesus into any particular struggle of my own?
  • Am I able to trust Jesus to sort out the situation I find myself struggling in?
  • Meditate upon Jesus, the Lord of all.

A song related to this theme:

Lord Jesus,
Thank you You are the Lord of all.
Help me to welcome you into all of my life – the triumphs & the troubles,
Give me the grace & strength to fully trust You at the helm & tiller of my life.
Holy Spirit bring Your empowering & enabling presence to all I am experiencing right now,
Bring divine acceleration to speed me to Your desired destination.
In Your mighty Name,
