The Sanctifying Spirit

Sanctification follows & flows from the saving work of Christ.
It is the process by which the Holy Spirit sets us apart for special & sacred purpose.
The Spirit & Scripture working in synergy to increasingly renew us in the image of God (Genesis 1:26).
It is the means of being made holy (set apart) by the Holy One.
It is a lifelong but life-giving process.

To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit,
for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace be multiplied. 1 Peter 1:2 NKJV

And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified,
but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
1 Corinthians 6:11

We are washed & cleansed from the penalty & tyranny of sin by the precious blood of Christ.
That is our great & glorious salvation. A free gift in response to saving faith. Hallelujah!!.
The Holy Spirit, with Scripture as a guiding light, then empowers us to live for God in this world.
A life set apart for God as we grow in holiness & right living for God.
As this takes place we are renewed in the image of God as we become more & more like Jesus (Romans 8:29).
Sanctification separates us from the power of sin as in obedience to the Holy Spirit we learn to live in a way that brings honour & pleasure to the Father’s heart.

Our heart is transformed (Ezekiel 36:26) & our minds are renewed (Romans 12:1-2).
Our renewed hearts, thoughts & attitudes then overflowing into right living.
In saving us Jesus worked for us, through sanctification He works in us through His Spirit.
In being sanctified we have personal power from God through the indwelling spirit.
This leads to an increasing desire & strength to walk in God’s ways & produce the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
The power of sin’s influence & impact increasingly fades as I increasingly surrender myself to Jesus through the work of His Spirit in & Scripture upon me.
The empowering Spirit guides me into my personal (bespoke) calling with its associated & accompanying gifts. So good.

Salvation leads to sanctification which in turn flows unto glorification.
Glorification is the completion of sanctification at the moment we are made exactly like Christ – perfect in holiness – & separated forever from the presence of sin.
This will be when we depart this life or Christ returns in glory.
In the meantime we need to increasingly surrender to the synergistic work of the Spirit & Scripture as they increasingly sanctify us.
A breathtaking & beautiful process. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • Where is the fruit of the Spirit budding, blossoming, flowering & fruiting in my life?
  • How readily am I surrendering to the Spirit & Scripture?
  • Meditate on the process of salvation, sanctification & glorification.

2 songs related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for saving us through Christ,
Thank you that you are now sanctifying us through the power of Your Spirit,
And that one day You will glorify us.
How amazing that you will make us perfect in holiness just like our Saviour Jesus.
You are so, so good to us Father,
Thank you for your amazing grace & unfailing love.
This we ask in the mighty Name of Jesus,
