Holy Week Devotions – Woes and Warnings – Keep Watch

Jesus shares a number of woes & warnings for Israel & it’s people.
He prophetically alludes to the destruction of both the temple & the holy city.
If Israel will not receive her saviour then judgement awaits & will surely follow.
Alongside this He outlines His own 2nd coming.

“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring;
men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” Luke 21:25-28

What happened to Jerusalem & the temple in AD70 (sacked & destroyed by the Romans) is a sure sign that Jesus will truly come again.
He is a true & accurate Prophet. We can trust His words, promises & prophecies to come true (Luke 21:32-33).
He has come once to deal with sin, death & evil & to make salvation available.
He will return to bring in the fullness of the Kingdom of God.
As He does so He will return for salvation & as Lord & Judge of all (Hebrews 9:24-28; 2 Timothy 4:1).
The question is will we be ready? Will we endure to the end – patiently persisting in faith (Luke 21:19 & 28)?

Jesus gives us hints & clues as to the signs of the times & the end of the age.
We are not provided with precise fine detailed information or exact times & dates.
We are to be a people who are constantly on watch – prayerfully considering all that is going on in the world.
Watching to understand & discern what is happening in this world. Interceding in response.
A people who are ready & prepared at all times. Watching & waiting for the Lord.
We are not to be caught napping, or living it up, but alert & attentive to the words of our Master.
Will we heed our Master’s warnings? Will we respond with faith to His words?
Marantha – Come Lord Jesus (Revelation 22:20).

For Reflection

  • How ‘heavily’ do the cares of this world weigh upon us?
  • Are we awake ready, watchful, prepared & prayerful?
  • Do we discern & understand the times we are living in?
  • Meditate on the prophetic warnings & words of Jesus.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the great victory we have in Christ,
Lord Jesus we watch & wait for your return.
Keep our hearts filled with this hope & our eyes & ears alert & attentive to the signs of the times.
Keep us strong & ever trusting in you.
Thank you that you are with us always & watch over us in every way. In your mighty name,
