Holy Week Devotions – Testing Tuesday

Following the disruption He had caused in the temple Jesus was a marked man.
The religious leaders seek to trap Him with a series of questions about His authority.
They are afraid to arrest Him because of the people with swelling crowds gathering for the Passover festival.
Instead they seek to lay hidden & veiled traps in their clever & deceitful questioning.
Jesus proves wise to their every intention & silences them with His wisdom & authority.

Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel,
that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him and spoke to Him, saying,
“Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?”
But He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me:
The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?”
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’
But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”
So they answered that they did not know where it was from.
And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” Luke 20:1-8

Jesus evades the loaded questions with ease & through parable & His own questions outmaneuvers the evil intentions of the religious leaders.
They are no match for Jesus who is the wisdom & power of God (1 Corinthians 1:24 & 30).
Jesus leaves everyone marveling at His authoritative answers & piercing questions.
The religious leaders back off & move away. For now at least.

The parable Jesus told was directed at the religious leaders – & they knew it!!.
They were out to hold onto their platforms & powerbase at all costs. Jesus must be got rid off & quickly.
In answering their question about taxes He also exposes their own hypocrisy (Luke 20:24)!!
Jesus then warned the disciples – making sure all the people could clearly hear – about the danger that the religious leaders were.
They are unreliable leaders & teachers & they will be judged for it.
Blind guides to a largely unhearing nation!!
In a question that no-one can answer Jesus makes clear that He is Lord (Luke 20:41-44)
Let us stay close to & truly follow Christ our CORNERSTONE.
The one who holds the whole building TOGETHER.

For Reflection

  • Have there been times when Jesus teaching deeply challenged us?
  • Are there parts of Christ’s teaching that we find it hard to follow?
  • Do we question Christ or back way from his teaching & Him?
  • Meditate on the authority & wisdom that Jesus carried.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
We give thanks that all authority in heaven & on earth has been given to Jesus.
We rejoice that He gladly & willingly shares it with us His people.
Through the power of Your Holy Spirit teach & train us to flow In it.
Help us to hear, heed & obey Jesus’ teachings,
So that we might truly walk in Your world, Your way.
In Jesus Mighty name.
Amen.
