The Wonder of Joy

Joy stems from the presence of God & Jesus is our joy.
It is a great source of strength to us & fortifies us in our spirit.
However joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose it by choosing Christ.
We have to choose it & we have to keep choosing it every moment of every day.
That is why there are so many exhortations to rejoice (take joy) in the Scriptures.

For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh, though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: Philippians 3:3-4

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! Philippians 4:4

I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, Colossians 1:24

The Apostle Paul knew what is was to take joy in Christ.
He had learnt to do that in the good times & the hard times.
He rejoiced with every success & he also rejoiced in the midst of severe suffering (Acts 16:16-31).
He rejoiced in all circumstances & exhorted his readers to do the same.
Paul’s joy was not anchored in his circumstances but in Christ his Saviour.
He endured his present sufferings in the light of the joy of Jesus’s return & God’s New Creation (Romans 8:18-25).

We like Paul are those who take joy in, & from, Christ.
We rejoice in the wonderful love & vibrant life our Saviour freely & abundantly gifts to us.
To rejoice & take joy in the midst of serious challenges & suffering requires us to make a choice.
To choose to keep trusting Christ no matter what we are experiencing or encountering.
To keep seeking the DNA of God’s kingdom – justice, joy & peace in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).
To stay in step with the Spirit & keep producing His fruit (Galatians 5:22-23).

Jesus is our great reward & joy.
To keep hold of that joy, & the strength it provides, we must keep choosing & trusting Christ.
Choosing & putting Christ in His rightful place – first place above all else.
Choice is an active thing – something we have to keep on doing.
Choose Christ, choose life, choose joy. EVERY moment of every day.
Count it all joy (James 1:2-8)!!!

For Reflection

  • Am I tasting the Lord’s joy & goodness?
  • In what ways am I rejoicing in the Lord?
  • Meditate on the power we have to choose & take joy.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You, & You alone, are my constant, unchanging & unceasing joy.
Jesus help me to maintain a kingdom & heavenly perspective through the trials & troubles of this life.
Holy Spirit teach me to dance to the beat of Your heart & to keep producing Your fruit in my life.
In & through the mighty Name of Jesus.
