Passion for Jesus
Passion & zeal are incredibly powerful emotions.
God himself is described as a jealous/zealous God (Exodus 34:14; Deuteronomy 4:24; Zechariah 8:2).
Peter displays a deep passion & zealous love for Jesus.
His actions powerfully demonstrating the potent affections of his heart.
And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.
Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. John 21:6-8
The resurrected Jesus appears to His disciples in the distance on the beach.
Once Peter knows it is Jesus he cannot wait to get to him.
Peter could be impetuous at times & his passion & zeal led him to do some crazy things at times.
Here is one of them as he launches himself into the sea in his haste to get to Jesus.
Whether Peter had to swim or wade we do not know but we can clearly see he was intent on getting to Jesus as quickly as possible.
Actions so often speak louder & more powerfully than words. Love makes itself known!
Jesus restores Peter following his earlier denials with a conversation revolving around Peter’s love for Jesus.
Through this healing & energising encounter we see 3 aspects of Peter’s love for Christ revealed:
A love that will put Jesus before all others
A love that will bear suffering & pay the cost
A love that will serve & meets the needs of others
The remainder of Peter’s life & ministry would be shaped by these 3 things.
Over the next 3 days we will further explore each aspect of Peter’s love for Jesus.
Through his passion & zeal for Jesus Peter was imitating the Lord’s incredible love for him..
May we too show a deep passion & strong zeal in our love for Christ.
May our actions reveal the true intent & object of our hearts.
- Am I comfortable expressing my emotions?
- How readily do I demonstrate my love, passion & zeal for Jesus.
- Meditate on the powerful & potent emotions that are passion & zeal.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you for Your amazing grace & unfailing love for me.
I love you because you first loved me.
Holy Spirit help me to be free to demonstrate & display my emotions.
May my actions truly reflect my affections.
This I ask in, & through, Your mighty Name.
