Passion for Jesus

The first aspect of Peter’s restoration was to make Jesus his supreme love.
To put & keep putting Jesus before ALL else. All people & all things.
Jesus goes further with His loaded questions to address a second way we must love Him.
Jesus also wanted Peter to express sacrificial love.

Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished;
but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.”
This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.” John 21:18-19

In the midst of denying Jesus Peter had demonstrated self-love.
Gripped by fear & dread Peter had desperately tried to save his own life by three times disowning & denying Jesus.
In contrast Jesus was willingly giving up His life to save others – pouring our God’s love sacrificially.
Through his restoration Peter was to learn that loving Jesus supremely means we will love others sacrificially.
In following Christ Peter’s ministry would take him down that path.
Jesus prophesies that Peter would follow Christ unto a martyrs death.
Loving God & others sacrificially will mean that we will need to deny our own will & desires on many occasions.
In his youth Peter had done whatever he wanted but in following Jesus he would learn another way.
The way of surrender & submission unto God & the way of denying the flesh with all it’s selfish lusts & ambitions.
It is the way to glorify God in your life & ministry.
Jesus had demonstrated a love that pays the cost.
He had sacrificed His life for the sins of the world.
Christ is looking for His followers to do the same.
To love without counting the cost – unconditionally & sacrificially.
He has shown us the way He wants us to follow.

Jesus invites us, like Peter, to follow Him.
To follow Him we must love Christ supremely & we must demonstrate His sacrificial love.
Like Christ we are to put God’s will & people’s needs before our own.
This is the way of the cross & this is what it is to live in the resurrection power of Christ.

For Reflection

  • Am I willing to pay the full cost of following Christ?
  • In what ways am I loving others sacrificially?
  • Meditate on what it means to walk in sacrificial love.

A song related to this theme:

Lord Jesus,
Thank you for Your sacrificial love for me,
Help me Lord to love like You do.
Holy Spirit teach me & give me strength to deny self & love others,
To keep humbly submitting & surrendering all unto You.
May my actions flow from & truly reflect my affections.
This I ask in, & through, Your mighty Name.
