Passion for Jesus

Jesus restores Peter by addressing 3 aspects of his love for Christ.
Firstly supreme love – Jesus in first place permanently.
Secondly sacrificial love. A love that puts God & others before self & is willing to pay the cost.
The third aspect is a love that will serve both God & others.

So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”
He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”
He said to him, “Feed My lambs.”
He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?”
He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”
He said to him, “Tend My sheep.”
He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”
And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. John 21:15-17

Jesus wanted Peter to shepherd & serve the people of God.
3 times Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him & each time Peter strongly affirms that he does.
Jesus responds each time to Peter’s affirmation of love with feed my lambs, tend my sheep, feed my sheep.
Peter is being called to care for, provide for, support & serve the Lord’s people.
Peter is being commissioned & given pastoral responsibility as part of his restoration.
He is to shepherd the flock of God under the guidance of Jesus the Good Shepherd (John 10:11-16).

In following Christ the Good Shepherd Peter’s ministry is to shepherd the flock of God.
He is to demonstrate a love for God that will meet the needs of others, particularly the people of God.
This will mean serving unconditionally as an under shepherd of the Chief shepherd (1 Peter 5:4).
A love that is willing to serve God & others.

If we love the Lord out of that love we will care for & serve others.
This begins with the people of God (Galatians 6:10) but extends to everyone.
Pastoral & practical love for all. We all have a role to play in pastoral care (shepherding).
Our love for Christ the motivation to love & serve others.

Jesus invites us, like Peter, to follow Him & love Him in all 3 of these ways.
To love Him supremely, sacrificially & through passionate service.
Lord through Your empowering Spirit give us the grace, passion & zeal to do so.
Our affections, attitudes & actions solely fixed on loving You & serving others.

For Reflection

  • Who is God asking my to feed, tend & care for right now?
  • In what ways am I loving others through service & serving?
  • Meditate on what it means to serve unconditionally like Christ.

A song related to this theme:

Lord Jesus,
Thank you for the immeasurable ways that through Your great love You serve me,
Help me Lord to love & serve like You do.
Holy Spirit give me grace & strength to care for & support others,
To love like You do through pastoral & practical action.
May my service flow from & truly reflect my deep affection for You.
This I ask in, & through, Your mighty Name.
