Laughter in the Bible
God invented laughter & He brings laughter into our lives. It is a gift to make us glad.
He can take our sorrow & suffering & turn it into joy & delight.
Weeping may endure for a season but joy is always available in & with the Lord (Job 8:21; Psalm 30:5).
That is because the Lord does great things on behalf of His people.
The people of Israel returning from exile in Babylon is a great example.
Psalm 126 gives us a glimpse into the joy, delight & laughter that this brought.
When the LORD brought back the captivity of Zion,
We were like those who dream.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
And our tongue with singing.
Then they said among the nations,
“The LORD has done great things for them.”
The LORD has done great things for us,
And we are glad. Psalm 126:1-3
The laughter of those returning from Exile
This psalm highlights the joy & sheer delight, expressed through laughter, of those who are returning to their homeland of Israel.
The people of promise returning to the Promised Land after seventy years of exile in Babylon.
Many years of weeping, heartache & tears are turned to the joy & delight of returning home to Israel.
God acting sovereignly on behalf of His people & to fulfil His purposes.
It speaks to us that nothing is impossible for our God & that with Him there is always & ever hope.
No situation or circumstance is hopeless when we look unto the Lord.
He can turn things around & He can turn them around quickly.
The Lord can turn our weeping & mourning into laughter & rejoicing in but a moment.
In & through His great love the Lord does great things for His people.
Israel were overwhelmed at God’s goodness & grace & thought they must be dreaming!!
God restored both their freedom & their fortunes.
This was noticed by the nations who testified of what the Lord had done for His chosen people.
People & nations are always watching & nothing goes unnoticed!! SELAH.
The Lord’s goodness & grace have been extended to us ‘In Christ’
Through the death & resurrection of Jesus we are invited to return from exile (cf Luke 15:11-32).
To return from the exile of estrangement from God into the freedom & delight of relationship with our loving heavenly Father.
Jesus’ blood rescuing us from the penalty & power of sin & death & His resurrection power empowering us to live for God in this world.
What a glorious return from exile we have ‘In Christ’.
Now that is something to gladden & fill every heart with joy, delight & holy laughter. HALLELUJAH!
The Lord has done a great thing for you in your return from exile ‘In Christ’. Laugh loud & laugh long!!!
Linger in the joy & delight we find in Christ our saviour.
The dream is a reality that continually delights the heart. Hallelujah.
May the Lord keep smiling over you continually.
- What great thing from God are you experiencing right now?
- What is God doing that I am laughing over right now? How has the Lord made you glad?
- Meditate on the great things our Great God does.
A song related to this theme:
Heavenly Father, God of Hope,
Thank you that there is always hope with You,
Thank you for the great hope I have ‘In Christ’.
Lord Jesus there is none like You,
You alone can turn around & restore my fortunes in the twinkling of an eye.
Holy Spirit keep me focused upon & looking unto the Lord,
The One in whom my freedom & fortune are bound up in & secure.
Keep me laughing & keep me rejoicing in praises,
This I ask in, & through, Your mighty Name.
