Laughter in the Bible
God does great things for His people which makes our hearts rejoice.
We can laugh with delight when the Lord turns our situations & circumstances around.
He can take our sorrow & suffering & turn it into sheer joy & delight (Luke 6:21; Psalm 30:11).
It is through God’s great love & grace for His children that He does such things but not everyone will appreciate it.
People will laugh, mock & scorn at what God does in, & through, our lives.
They did it to Jesus & at times they will do it to us too.
While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue leader and said to him, “Your daughter is dead. Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
When Jesus went to the house, he let only Peter, John, James, and the girl’s father and mother go inside with him. All the people were crying and feeling sad because the girl was dead, but Jesus said, “Stop crying. She is not dead, only asleep.”
The people laughed at Jesus because they knew the girl was dead. But Jesus took hold of her hand and called to her, “My child, stand up!” Her spirit came back into her, and she stood up at once. Then Jesus ordered that she be given something to eat. The girl’s parents were amazed, but Jesus told them not to tell anyone what had happened. Luke 8:49-56 New Century Version
The Laughter of the scorners
The professional mourners – wailing at the death of Jairus’ daughter – have the audacity to laugh at Jesus.
They ridicule Jesus & mock Him when He claims the girl is not dead but only sleeping.
To prove His point Christ then goes on to raise the young girl from the dead.
The parents are in awe & wonder – who wouldn’t be!! The Kingdom of God has broken in with power.
Jesus is bringing life & salvation. Jairus & his wife are now experiencing laughter of a very different kind!
Jesus continues to bring life & salvation unto those that will receive it from Him.
He carries the resurrection power to raise anyone from the grave of sin & death.
We must be careful not to limit or laugh at what Jesus can do.
The Lord of life laughs in the face of death. Hallelujah!!
He has triumphed over it forever (1 Corinthians 15:55-57). O what a mighty victory.
We can laugh with delight at what the Lord is doing for us, & others, or we can join the mocking & scorning of the doubters.
That is the choice that we always face – faith or doubt. It is the choice between life (‘In Christ’) & death.
We must be those who with the Holy Spirit’s help & strength always make doubt the servant of faith.
May we therefore be those who chose life & reach out for Jesus in faith.
Christ, the Lord of Life, will make us laugh with awe & wonder.
- How easily does my faith in Jesus triumph over my doubts?
- When was the last time you laughed with awe & wonder at what God was doing?
- Meditate on Jesus the Lord of Life.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you that there is life & resurrection power in Your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Lord Jesus keep me always trusting in You.
Holy Spirit keep me strong in faith so that doubt is always a servant to it.
Keep me laughing at Your awe & wonder in, & through, my life.
This I ask in, & through, Your mighty Name.
